Is leatherworking worth having on a hunter? Is there any pre bis items I can create with it?
I think the devilsaur set is pre raid BiS.
Also, you can craft resist gear which will be needed throughout various raids.

I had leatherworking on my hunter in vanilla and crafted the black dragonscale stuff for myself. Crafting professions will slow you down immensely if you use them to craft your own relevant gear as you level. That said, if you are looking for an immersive experience where you can be proud of your self-sufficiency, then yes, leatherworking is good for hunters.
Skinning is also easy and profitable, so that’s a plus.

None of the leaherworking items you’ll want are BoP.
Hunters can use pretty much any professions except blacksmithing and tailoring. Also ignore people who say dont craft while leveling (especially with lw). Most crafting its hard to get that 5-10 points a level but when you have to kill like 200+ mobs per level getting enough leather is super easy.

I remember leatherworking being useful during leveling as well, particularly hitting 40 and going from leather to mail armor. I think it was turtle scales that I farmed heavily, which was also beneficial in terms of both XP and turtle meat for cooking. Without it, I would have still had mostly leather armor for many more levels.

no crafting isnt really worth it today unless you want to craft raid flasks.
Cant tell if your dead wrong or talking about retail.

I had LW on my hunter back in vanilla.
There were some good pieces but it’s really your weapon that you need to keep up to date. And it took me to level 42-43 to get my mount money.
Tried again on ND with a hunter. This time did skinning/mining and vendored/sold what I got. Kept my bow up to date with AH/vendor/quests. Had my mount money at level 38.
Now I did take LW on my rogue and found that it was much more helpful to a rogue than a hunter.
I would say take skinning and either mining/herb and just vendor/sell.
You’ll have enough gold to buy what you need.
I might try that. Mining has always been my favorite profession and I’ve had it on all of my toons. Pre 40 can skinning make a lot of money by itself though?
Generally speaking, there was nothing you could do with a profession that couldn’t be better done by just having two gathering professions and buying the stuff you wanted. Until they started putting in BoP profession gear (bop gems for JC, shoulder enchants for inscription, etc), professions were about convenience, or about making money if you could get a rare pattern (I made a crap ton on shifting cloaks back in vanilla)
Yes - lots of vendor trash at a minimum. You’re basically doubling the $$ from beasts if all you do is vendor the mats.
I’ll be going skinning on my rogue for a little bit to get some extra gold before dropping it for Alchemy.
I’ll be skinning/LW on my druid, which will allow me to craft gear for both of my characters, and supply me with free mats and extra gold once it’s leveled.
Win-Win.
On ND I just vendored the bars/leather until I got to thick leather/thorium.
Then used AH onward. ND was a new server with no economy for the low level stuff. Pretty much how classic will be.
And I had my mount money before hitting level 40.
Leather-working is low key the biggest money maker profession at the beginning.
