I’m looking for advice how to learn to heal. I have this Paladin, but am willing to reroll from level 1. I love the Paladin class, and I’m trying to take advantage of all 3 specs. But, I’ve never healed in any content.
Is it better to reroll and start to heal at low levels first?
My recent experience with dungeons has been a very “go go go” type experience with many players outgearing the content. That doesn’t seem to be a good way to learn. I’m not into pvp, but perhaps random BGs could be a good start? Any other ideas?
Thanks!

Practicing low level can be alright, though a lot of Classic - Wrath dungeons are outright overtuned.
Looking at you Stratholme.

no need to reroll, just respec
practice is the best option, and with heroics in BFA be so underturned towards the end of the expansion you can learn there

The addon “HealBot” is very handy to have.

In general it iant too difficult to get to a competent place with most healing classes. A quick guide and then work your way up from there. Best way to learn is to do. Start in some normals or heroics and hop into lfr.

Thanks, everyone. I’ll see if I can start in some level appropriate dungeons. I appreciate the tips!

Yes, you should level from 1-120 by dungeon spamming. That’s pretty much all there is to it. It won’t teach you how to heal mythic+ 10+ or how to raid heal, but it will teach you how to the foundation you need to break into those styles. Dungeon spam leveling is good because you’ll be forced to add one spell at a time and get a feel for how each spell fits into your kit.

Just be sure to maybe make a macro to tell the group you’re learning. A tank paying attention to chat ( they’re rare but out there ) would probably appreciate that heads up before they go pulling literally EVERYTHING in a room

I prefer the Vudho addon for healing. It’s awesome. I’ve been learning to heal myself on my holy priest.

The best way to learn a class is to start at 1 and get to know the abilities 1 at a time as you learn them, by the time you have your full kit you’ll know exactly what everything does and when it’s best to use it.

If you can go with a tank/friends you know. If you can’t do that then you can try what I did. Heal random battle grounds. If you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball.

Get the addon HealBot if you don’t already have it and configure it to the way you want. Pretty much everything while levelling is not very good because you outpace it so quickly. But once you hit max level and start getting gear, work up through the mythic+ system level by level. Whereas you might gear up to do +10s really quickly as a dps, start at like 5 and again work your way up until you feel comfortable

One of the lesser spoken of, but very important is to learn to stutter-step. This applies to any spec that casts. So many healers/casters cannot move across an area w/out forsaking more gcds than necessary.
This is what separates excellent heals/dps from average, in my experience.

If you have never healed before, take advantage of the XP buff and start from scratch it will make you more comfortable with each spell that you receive.
Also, download an add-on to make your life a bit easier, Vuhdo, Healbot or even clique.
Now keep in mind, that cleanse is your friend for debuffs never forget it, there’s a lot of healers that don’t use their cleanse and that alone would make life easier for them.

Dont waste time leveling. You can learn pve healing via m0 more efficiently.
Bgs are so random. You cant measure yourself. Better try rated arena once u are geared and comfy with pve healing.

Your gonna get the go go go mentality no matter what, so if you wanna pally heal, run with it.
General advice i would say.
*I would recommend enabling raid frames for party, just seeing everyone as a green bar makes it a little easier (imo) to see who needs healing and when.
*Play around with your heal spells, get used to the cast times, so you know what you have time to cast as you run about while playing dodge the bad.
*If you can, make friends with a tank to run a bunch with, it just helps when learning to have someone you can count on.
*Communicate with the party… if you need mana, speak up! Don’t let them drag you nearly oom into another pack, your the one keeping them alive.
And most importantly…
*When your in a dungeon and if its going rough… Breath, unclench your jaw (the clench you didnt even know you had) and relax. Stress is just no good anyways and your supposed to have fun.

Great advice, everyone! Thanks for contributing!
My go to for healing is Vuhdo. I used to do healbot in wrath. But it’s nice to have some keybinds with an addon and have separate buttons for normal gameplay incase the addon malfunctions. It’s a good idea to practice both with normal ai and with the addon.

Holy Paladin is fairly easy to get into.
I strongly suggest you don’t re-roll.
Unless you want a different archetype of healer.

I have always found practicing anything below max level to not be very useful since the gameplay changes so much when you get to max…
My one piece of advice is if you want to continue to play Paladin I would suggest practicing playing very offensively. If you plan on doing dungeons there are only a couple situations in each dungeons that you would want to hold wings for healing. Most of the time you will want to use them for damage.
