Learning Monk + Mana Management

Hi everyone,

I’m pretty new to mw and want this toon to be my second raid-ready possibility after my disc priest main. I feel like with a decent group and good tank mana is a non-issue for me. However I find myself struggling with mana on tough fights/when people are being well, bad. My rotation is popping mana tea on CD and setting up renewing mist on tank and dps getting dmg. One thing I feel is maybe a mana drain is interrupting soothing mist to cast renewing mist on someone else once they need heals. Should I not be doing that? Appreciate any feedback.

Keep renewing mists on cooldown. Use mana tea when you need to spam, not just on cooldown. And use TFT with vivify if mana is that tight. Are you running chi ji? That’s incredibly strong as a cooldown for burst but changes your rotation to maximize the EMs to get out. Also what is your 50 talent? Rising mist should be the go to and getting used to it to save yourself on renew casts is something you’ll want to work on as well.

Edit - also make sure you’re preempting with renewing. Something I see new MWs struggle with is not having them out when they need to burst vivify and end up falling behind. Good renewing play will have you using 1 vivify instead of 3 if you dont get them out on time.

Thank you for this! I changed my talents to Chi-Ji and rising mist and noticed a great synchrony between the two. Rising mist also reminds me of atonement for those critical situations where I just cant wait for the gcd of putting out another renewing mist. I didn’t realize how much of a mana drain Yu-lon was. Appreciate the help

Interrupting soothing mist is fine, thats not the issue.

MW is one of the most mana hungry healers in the game. Proper mana management is something that comes with practice and time. Coming off another healer, of course, you have some of this practice already, it’s just a question of knowing your toolkit.

As others have said you pretty much want to be using renewing mist on CD, it makes a world of difference in how many times you need to cast vivify to top people up. For AOE damage you also want to cast essence font (after the damage goes out, as much of its healing is loaded in its bolts and not its hot) and then cast vivify to top people off. The essence font hot will proc off of Rising Mist, but more importantly it also causes our mastery to trigger twice, making your vivify hit much harder on the target you cast it on.

In a normal Mana Tea rotation, you don’t want to be casting soothing mist or channeling essence font. You want to spam vivify and renewing, with a enveloping thrown in here and there. When you have 2 seconds left on the buff, start an essence font channel because it’ll take the mana at the beginning of the spell.

Be careful with enveloping outside of chi-ji/yulon. It heals for a lot, but it’s also our most expensive spell. I typically reserve it for the tank or someone taking high single target damage.

Other than that, in dungeons its good to get into the habit of sitting to drink anytime you’re at 20% mana or below. We can catch up to people pretty quickly, or get ahead of them pretty quickly, so sparing even just five seconds can add up over a run. Good luck, and I hope you enjoy MW!

Remember all healers are mana hogs when their party doesn’t interrupt, and stands on bad

Or when their tanks don’t use mitigation…
