If you learn a mount while mounted then your character is forced to being on foot, but you retain the aura for the mount you were riding. You are then in a weird state where the game thinks you are mounted but are actually on foot. You can get around this by using another mount, or performing some action to unmount you (like casting a spell) but attempting to use the mount you were already riding does not work
