There is nothing worse in classic WoW than feeling like I’m playing a single player RPG like retail WoW. One of the main reasons people wanted classic years ago was because it was more of a real “world”, in fact one of the main driving points even in real 2004 was that there were barely any loading screens or instances. Now… the whole world is an instance.
How come back in 2007 when it was TBC I would still see people even in the barrens constantly leveling, killing mobs etc… but now on full worlds other than the first 2 days… there are no more levelers?
Maybe we should remove layering after the first week, just like it was promised when Classic WoW first came out in 2019? Why is layering kept after the first initial wave of levelers? It makes the world feel completely dead even on the most populated full servers.
It completely ruined even 2019 classic WoW for me and many others who enjoy doing something other than standing in orgrimmar.

Ok remove layers now what 100 players camping hogger or any quest choke point
Mobs are already killed on spawn , bots everywhere…

People would naturally filter out to lower pop realms if there weren’t layers. That’s part of why the game actually worked up till 2010. Layering ruined wow and it was a stupid thing to add.

Ok i rather have 500000 people camping hogger than feel like im playing a single player game.
One im enjoying myself, the other im not. Thats the difference and thats why we play private servers

Unironically after the change last night the game feels dead and I might just try a private server again.

Tbh, I quested on a mage and I’m not even lying the only person I seen out in the world was a handful of bots and 1 dwarf hunter that waved to me after I buffed him. I truly agree with at least removing layers now that launch is done and everyone’s spread out.
Also Capital citys should NOT have layering. I only had like 20 people in stormwind, not counting the 50+ rogue bots in Stockagdes. I think it’s time of at least SOME servers to get rid of layering and only implement it in zones where there will be 500+ at a given time.
I’d rather wait to farm stuff if it gives me a chance to group up with others and make it feel not so empty or lonely.
Remember this is a MMORPG not a single player hub instance.

You do NOT want to remove layers. Maybe more layer merging during off hours.

“You do NOT want to remove layers” That’s funny you say that, blizzard said the same thing to us about Classic Wow.
I’m for removing layers 100%

I played on a zero layer server in 2019 classic and it was awesome. Heartseeker alliance. It was a messed up server with 99% alliance pop but it was still great and I had a blast playing on it. The issue is they have made layers more and more aggressive and let servers get out of control. You don’t need 30000 raiders on a server. You need like 1-2k max to actually play the game.

Unfortunately layering is required today. Back in 2004 MMOs were a growing genre, so there was a constant influx of new players to keep servers alive. That isn’t the case anymore. The day a server launches in any MMO, it’s population starts to decline. Slow at first, but normally after the first month or so you will see a dramatic decline in players.
Without layers we would eventually be left with a lot of dead servers. The fix for that is constant server merges, which is an equally abhorrent alternative. Layering sucks, but there’s really no other way.

Youve bought into the lie. If layering was never introduced, the game would have been fine. in 2006 they did free server transfers and things like that to keep realms populated. There should be two layers at launch MAX which is how it was in 2019, FOUR YEARS AGO. Then you remove the layers and let it be. Instead blizzard went all in and we have TEN LAYERS.

Nostalrius had WAY more players and the world felt a lot better… I’m not sure why you’re scared to play with people. It’s a mmo why limit the opportunity of meeting people or fun events that could happen that’s unqiue to a server rather than multiple layers on the server instead of you now have this’ PLEASE INVITE LAYER 2 3 4 5 6756768 etc.
It’s just 1 server and that’s it. Over complicated stuff that’s not needed after the first week of launch

Nah, I have eyes. What I described is exactly what happens to MMOs that release servers like wow did in 2004. Certain Pservers are the exception, but they are different being that they are pirate servers. Even then, they display how terrible vanilla is on overpopulated servers. Twow got terrible before they finally split the servers.

nostalrius was way more fun than this. I remember some quests were impossible to do but whatever, i just skipped them. Was way better to grind more but have an actual living world.

For some reason I feel people rather be greedy and take advantage of anything they can to min max at the cost of having a breathing world full of players. It’s sad to see honestly.
Not to even mention botting now…This layering non sense has amplified the amount of bots and is going to make the economy a disaster now that bots can hide and avoid reports from MOST players.

The layer system is why you’re not in a queue.
It is Blizzard’s fault for not considering World of Warcraft worth the money to update or re-write the code to where it can have a modern server system. Yes it would take a lot of work, but new games generally do. 20+ years and there isn’t even a WoW2 yet. Just milking old code.
I didn’t play Classic, only Vanilla.
Layering is consistently one of the worst aspects of playing this game. It’s so botched. Stepping outside of SFK to reset but our healer went to a separate layer and died and we can’t even try to BR them because their corpse isn’t on the same layer?
Chasing an opponent in PvP and suddenly your target is gone and you’re being attacked by three bears because you got transferred to another layer.
The worst, worst stuff.
We could easily have twice as many servers given that each server seems to have 10 layers at peak pop. I actually vastly underestimated how many people are playing each server until I got NWB and started layer hopping. Even if we suddenly suffered 80% attrition, we could still split all servers in half and have healthy populations.

If there were no layers, the queues for servers would be astronomical. If you count each layer as a server unto itself, that would require them making 20+ new servers in each region and that is just not cost effective or feasible. I am also not a fan of layers but they are not going anywhere.

OP is just hyperbole… rarely do you not see someone in the wild… even with layers. You have to play at very off hours and previously would phase when layers closed. Now at 4 am you may be alone for a bit with the new change… but it is still rare.

Wait till you actually play with the new changes. No one is talking about how it was even yesterday.
