Layer 8 Torghast - Thoughts

I finally finished both of them. I honestly have no idea how I killed Patricia Cromwell, that was not an easy fight. Maybe I got a couple of lucky crits and lucky heals during the final fight?

  • It feels like the quality of anima powers you find on layer 8 are subpar compared to the lower levels which make them a breeze but maybe this was just bad RNG for me.
  • The tuning jump from layer 7 to layer 8 needs looked at. It feels like jumping straight from a M0 to M10 right now.
  • Bosses like the guys who spam sin bolt are way overtuned. You only get so many stuns/interrupts and defensives to live through them but they spam them at a high speed of pace. I ended up having to re-do Upper Reaches because I got that guy as the final boss and couldn’t kill it and I ended up getting Patrician Cromwell… a fight from hell.
  • On my Paladin, the only way I could do enough damage and survive some of the floor bosses was to use the repentance trick. Once they get 4-6 stacks, repent them and out of range them so they’re not in combat anymore. Their stacks will drop off, they won’t reset and you can engage them again. Warning: This doesn’t work on Patrician Cromwell, repent only lasts for 3 seconds.

Is layer 8 supposed to be challenging than the previous layers? Yes but the tuning needs looked at because as I understood it, layer 8 was supposed to be for people who are Mythic Dungeon ready. I don’t know how hard you think Mythic Dungeons are but they’re a hell of a lot easier than Layer 8 depending on RNG anima powers, which bosses spawn, etc.

I mean atm it feels like layer 6 to 7 is like an m0 to an m8-9 already. cant imagine layer 8 xD

It’s a huge jump. The HP of everything and damage skyrockets comparatively.

Repent will allow you to drop stacks from boss? Nice, good to know.

Drastic difference for me doing level 7 of Fracture chambers compared to 8.

Part of the difference was the the anima powers offered though.

The Elites and Trash were seriously worse though and I had a lot of close calls that involved kiting that barely worked. Also those Assassins… those things are awful and need a serious tune.

For me honestly, overalI thought it was alright. I went into 7 and 8 around ilvl 190 fully flasked, food buff, rune. The floor bosses imo are way overtuned, and I’m sure blizz will do something about them. As for anima powers, some really are lackluster once you get to higher levels. I always prioritize anima lure, soul remnants, and any primary stat increase powers and go from there. The rep upgrades you can buy from Ven’ari really make a difference. You can buy an anima orb for 5 phantasma. Seeing that interview with Ion that the majority of the player base is just now seeing perdition hold, could explain why there is a lot of trouble with torghast. Do not neglect those rewards because they really have an impact to your torghast experience.

I’m pretty sure it’s not intended. Repent works on assassins too. Just keep one repented and no more will spawn. For bosses, I would repent one, run away until I was out of combat and then the stacks would drop off, then engage again.

Use it while you can because I’m sure as more people figure it out, it’ll be hotfixed.

Not going to lie, this comment from Ion took me aback. I feel like I play pretty regularly and at a good clip. I may have missed some Maw dailies, but I only unlocked perdition hold late last week. I didn’t realize I was that far behind?

i can’t even do 6 anymore, not on tank, not on dps. Demon hunter

It is hard now and I would expect it to be.

I think my question for balancing is how easy (or not) does it become once people are in normal quality raid loot and higher? And when they have all torghast upgrades?

Thinking anyone can just waltz in with some heroic/mythic dungeon mix of loot and beat it all comfortably is a bit silly. I know some people are doing it depends on class and/or skill, but they are the outliers.

It’ll be interesting to see how gear impacts ease of clearing.

I think what happened was that as soon as most of the player base finished their two dailies, they called it a day. Not realizing that getting as much rep hitting 5 stars in the maw was the way to go. I know for me, I tried to avoid it. But the text is weird, you aren’t instantly killed for hitting 5 stars, you get a dot. By the time it starts to do lethal damage you most likely already hearthed back to ven’ari.

Torghast was a blast the first few weeks until artificial garbage was implemented to cause a false sensation of difficulty where I am at the point where I know longer wish to do torghast and not even sure if i want to play the game anymore.

Its clear the developers do not actually play the F#@$ing game. hard debuffs is not what a rogue-like experience is like. hard hp stacks and damage increases ruin the the fun to be had in torghast.

Blizzard, its supposed to be a different experience, don’t clump it in with mythic dungeons and raiding because thats what it feels like

I finally managed to finish both layer 8s as disc after being stuck on cromwell in the upper reaches for a few runs. Absolutely feels overtuned at the moment, even compared to 7s. The sin bolt guys are pretty ridiculous too, they do so much damage so quickly that it can be hard to recover if you fall too far behind.

I dunno how some dps classes will even get it done unless they have way better powers than priests do.

I’ve soloed everything on rogue till upper reaches 8, That wing has such small floors with barely any powers, and the caster floor guardians are unfair with sin bolt and pacify you. I had to party for the first time. Unrelated Goxul the Devourer is extremely overpowered with party scaling, let alone by himself.

Honest question: After only being on Week 4 of this expansion, was Torghast meant to be cleared on the highest difficulty so soon? If this was meant to last the whole expansion with 8 layers, and some are able to clear it now, I don’t know if that’s a good thing.

Unless they plan on adding more layers in the future?

Tried it. Tank got two shot on floor one boss. No thanks

Bodied Layer 8 no problem. But it was more difficult.

Kid,
Torghast isnt a heroic raid or mythic dungeon

its a side gig to collect soul ash to craft legendaries, no one gives a flying dog poop who clears it or not… but for those who cant. they miss out on part of the game.

“Kid.” What’s with the unnecessary condescension?

I wasn’t saying I cared who cleared it, and I’m not sure how you got that out of my comment. I was saying that, if they designed it to last for a significant amount of time, having some people getting it to farm mode on Week 4 isn’t a good sign.

You can call it a side feature all you want, but Blizzard did put some hype into it as an expansion feature. If people are getting it done this quickly in Week 4 it will just be another Island Expedition.

See that’s the problem though. Torghast is not designed to last an expansion. It is tied to legendary only, if you need legendary you’d do it, if you don’t then you wouldn’t do it.

Originally the “endless corridor” mode was supposed to be the mode that last the entire expansion, except they got lazy or ran out of time and it is no longer there. Now they are trying to arbitrarily increase the difficulty to, I don’t know, prevent people from crafting legendary? Really?

Torghast was marketed as something you can do solo if you want, that you can have crazy powers, and is fun. The current Torghast is none of those.
