I have not been able to get WoW (retail) to launch. I can get to the screen with my characters and hit “Play” and then stops working; sitting there doing nothing until I click on the screen, at which time it fades white and then tells me it is not responding.
I run Avast AV (have for years) and have never had it interfere with the game. This year I did switch to an AMD card, and initially it was telling me my graphics card was out of date, but then I added code (“-d3d11”) and that message went away.
I have gone through all of the trouble shooting and uninstalled and reinstalled the games three times this week. Help! With the new expansion coming I want to work a new toon up, but it’s pretty frustrating not to be able to even get into the game.
Thanks for the reply.
PowerColor Hellhound AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Graphics Card - new in January
All drivers updated both through AMD and Avast Driver Updater. Windows is also up to date.

Weird hiccup - computer operates great until I try to open WoW… once that happens and I pull up Task Manager, I can’t close that without it crashing, and then I can’t open other games. As long as I don’t try to open WoW, everything works.
Not at all…two drives (one SSD) and neither is near capacity.
The problem never comes around until I try to launch WoW, which strikes me as very strange, but it does feel like to a possibly larger issue… I swapped cases and video cards in January (but kept all the other parts) and I did not try to play WoW until the past month, so far with no success. But I’ve run all kinds of diagnostics that have not found a problem, and followed all of the Blizzard steps, including multiple uninstalls/reinstalls. I’m getting close to scrapping it and reinstalling everything again from the ground up.
I would have already done that if an app is launching super slow. Probably some registry pathways or something that no longer point to the correct places.
Before you reinstall…
Take that line out of the box you put it in.
I beleve your update on your drives and game update no longer needs that.
So I would try that…
This would be inside Battle.net app…menu…
Next when you start wow and see your toons…
Menu…
Look for the box for your card… Not default, but the cards name. As well as the dx12… There are also new settings on bottom. Uncheck them…
If it crashes… Note dowm when.
There is also the proxie server after that… Starts up… If that is being blocked…it will crash wow…
Did the reinstall before I saw the most recent reply. Marked solved prematurely.
Did a complete reinstall and still running in to the exact same problem with WoW. I got rid of the extra code in game settings, but am now IDing two problems:
error code of ctaud2k.sys not being able to download (appears after start up)
(related) Device mgr: Under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers, both AMD Streaming Audio Device and Creative Audigy Audio Processor (WDM) have a Code 39 error that it can’t upload the driver, yet my drivers are all up to date.
Now when I open WoW, I can’t even get the opening animation to work.
