Latency issues

Recently my latency on just this game jumps to crazy high levels and rests normally about 122 ms. This hasn’t happened to me before, even when my rigs for gaming were significantly worse. But now when I join pvp or instances I’m getting world latency at 8095ms. I’ve reset my own internet dozens of times, I can’t figure out what to do.

Hey there,

So without connection data or system information to dig through it can be tough to narrow these sorts of things down. This could be a driver issue, software conflict, a network/connection issue or corruption with the game client. Depending on a lot of situational factors there could even be service issues compounding the situation.

The first step in troubleshooting is to return the client to default installed condition and retest. If the issue goes away then it was likely a modification or corruption of the client causing it. If the issue persists then we at least rule out the game client itself as a potential source.

If you have any addon managers installed. They are fine programs but they have the tendency to prevent our troubleshooting steps from working. Please uninstall them and leave them off your system until we have solved the problem.

Once that is confirmed, we need to delete the temporary game files to attempt to eliminate any corrupt data that might be affecting the client or characters. Your game will rebuild them when you next login but this will remove all installed addons. Please do not reinstall any addons until we know the issue is resolved: https://battle.net/support/article/7549

Let’s reset the in game user options:

  1. Click the blue bnet icon on the bnet app.
  2. Choose settings, then game settings.
  3. Click the reset in game user options button under the correct game listing.
  4. Confirm the changes and close the window.

We will want to run the repair tool on the game client: https://battle.net/support/article/7655

Retest. If the issue persists, continue on. (keep the client in default condition until the source of the issue is found.)

The next focus is on the connection to the service itself:

Try doing an extended power cycle on your system. Turn off all devices including the modem. Wait 30 minutes, turn on the modem, wait 5 minutes, turn on any network devices, wait 2 minutes, turn on your computer and try the game.

You can try switching your DNS settings to use a free public DNS servers instead of your ISPs Servers:

We do not have individual steps for specific modems or routers so if you need assistance accessing or updating the devices, contact the device maker/provider.

Sometimes firewall or routing software/hardware will have some advanced settings to prioritize and manage types of network traffic. Normally that is not an issue but we have seen situations where it can intefere with the delivery of the data for our games/voice chat.

Let’s try turning off these features:

QoS
SIP ALG
RoG (ASUS Routers Only)
Security firewalls (Some ISP provided modems)

Not all devices will have these options and the steps for turning these functions off will be different depending on the make/model/software version of the devices and programs involved. If necessary look at the documentation for your security and routing products to find out how to turn these options off.

In some cases there is a corrupt or misconfigured setting within the router or modem. We cannot say what that might be offhand but the easiest way to resolve these conflicts would be to factory reset the router and/or modem.

You may need to look up your specific model for the steps on how to do this and in some rare cases you may need to have this done by the ISP. Feel free to reach out to them for assistance if necessary.

Does the issue persist? Continue on:

Try running your system in selective startup mode: https://battle.net/support/article/200483

Create a new administrator account: https://battle.net/support/article/34550

Once the account is created, shut down the computer, wait 60 seconds, restart, log into the new profile and try the app/client.

This should help with potential software conflicts.

Beyond that just make sure your Windows and all system hardware is up to date with drivers from the hardware maker themselves (Do not use windows update to update drivers and avoid third party driver update software)

Should the issue persist after doing everything I mentioned above. We would want more specific details best provided via support ticket. (Click the support button above, then click contact support.) Be sure to include as much of the following as you can within the ticket:

Name/realm of affected character(s): (all if it is affecting all characters)
Timeframe when this typically happens: (morning, evening, anytime etc…)
Activities being performed when the issue happens. (Questing, worldboss, PVP, Raids, BGs, Arenas etc…)
A list of specific troubleshooting you have already performed: (You can link to this post if you have performed all of the steps I listed)

Finally be sure to include the requested system files (instruction links on the form.) As well as the following connection data:

WinMTR - The test should be 10 minutes long, done while you are playing and are actively replicating the issue in game. (The easiest way to do this is start the test as instructed, begin play. If no issue within 10 minutes, stop the test and restart it. Repeat until the issue happens. Save the results to txt file and include it with your system files in the ticket submission.)

I did try a few of those options I had a friend who happens to work with internet connections as a job and after running a few tests he suggested it might just have been my service provider connection towards blizzard servers. To his credit it did clear up later that day, but I’ll be keeping a eye on it to see if it’s truly something on my end.
