Latency in Shadowlands

Hi,

The same issue that many people in other threads are having. Massive Lag spikes in the game. Some of them persist for long periods of time. The lag is made worse when in groups and impossible to play at all in a raid.

It can show as high as 10,000ms World Latency. This issue only began in the Shadowland pre-patch and has continued through the actual launch.

I play without addons but even still I took the normal steps of Renaming the WTF, Interface and Cache folders.

I do not use a Windows slideshow background.

Here is my log:

Edit: I play many other games and have had no such issues with any other games. This is specific to World of Warcraft and specific to the time frame of pre-patch Shadowlands.

There seems to be quite a bit of packet loss and high latency in the ISP’s or their routing partner’s network before reaching the Blizzard servers.

There were 1136 packets sent to Blizzard, but less than 800 made it there after loss on those hops.

Are you suggesting my ISP does not allow me to play games on Blizzard servers?

I am also curious as to why this lag would occur more intensely in groups and raids. Is there something about groups and raids that causes increased packet loss?

Is there some change that Blizzard has made in the recent pre-patch and expansion which would cause an ISP to see an increase in packet loss?

The packet loss isn’t about blizzard. It’s about the ISP’s path to blizzard. Those network hops are dropping packets - all types of packets.

And yes, it would appear to be worse in raids and groups, as the information is about more people and more things going on. The last hope highlighted above has 35% packet loss. Over 1/3rd of the information isn’t making it from your computer to blizzard, so yes, things are going to be weird.

Again, this is an ISP issue. It’s not happening on blizzard’s servers, it’s happening on the way to blizzard’s servers, which is controlled by your ISP.

I feel like this response is completely ignoring the part about this being a very recent issue.

I had no issues playing WoW in October. I’ve played on a laptop in China and on my PC. Nothing like this happened.

Day 1 of pre-patch, this issue surfaced and I figured it was pre-patch they are just ironing things out. These issues have not gone away. We are talking 10,000ms on screen here, not just a slight performance issue, the game is now unplayable.

If I can’t play the game in the next few weeks then I’ll be making this my last subscription (bit upset at paying the 6 month sub to get screwed like this tbh) and last Blizz game I buy.

I’ve been a wow subscriber since 2004 and own nearly every Blizz game but this kinda response is the sort of response where you lose a customer. I know you don’t really care about 1 person but there are a lot of people not based in China with the same issue so I’m willing to bet I won’t be the only one doing this.

Good luck with getting the expansion playable.

Correlation is not causation.

The winmtr report shows specific issues on your connection. That’s all we’re addressing. If you don’t want to address that, that’s fine. But what we’re addressing is the specific actual results of your connection diagnostic.

This issue doesn’t fit the same description as players in NA on full realms, or players in Oceania experiencing issues with Telstra’s routing. This is something a bit different but is demonstrated in the test data as a routing issue on the ISP’s end. Problems like this can come up out of nowhere as an ISP does maintenance, has a hop that is out of service, or is experiencing heavy traffic.

You could try testing a VPN and seeing if the connection issue clears up. I’m not sure what routes VPNs use from China to reach the NA servers, so it may run into the same problem, but it’s worth finding out.

I don’t work at Blizzard, but I care. I responded to your post so I could help you figure out what’s causing these problems.

Reporting as of 8th Jan 2021, the issue is still not solved. I experience bouts of major server lag every day a couple of times a day. Its been two months and the issue persists.

Also, my ping is like 5ms world or home. I am not getting high numbers like you guys, but I still feel the affect all the same.

I asked people in general chat about this and we are all experiencing it at the same time. People claim its “because people are attacking the world boss” but, I dunno if it is, and if it is, of course, this needs to be fixed.

TWO MONTHS. And its been reported that blizz is trying to fix this back in November 2020.

Are you op? OP has an issue specific to his isp that needs to be addressed by the isp. If you are not him then this is not your issue and you should make your own thread explaining your problem and post a winmtr
