Laptop not using dedicated graphics?

Hey all, having an issue here I can’t figure out and google isn’t helping, and I know this isn’t wow general but related but it is impacting my ability to play and I can’t figure this out on my own.

I have an Asus laptop with an RTX 2070 in it, and for the past several months it’s been plugged into a tv via HDMI. I’m home for the holidays and brought the laptop with me, and now I can’t play anything using the laptops screen.

When I’m using the screen on the laptop, display setting are showing that it is using microsoft basic display drive driver. I can’t even open nvidia control panel because it will say I’m not connected to a nvidia device.

When I’m plugged into a monitor or tv via hdmi however, it will show that it’s connected to the RTX 2070, but not on the laptop screen.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, anything Nvidia related, tons of restarts, and nothing is working. I can’t find anything on google either. I could really use the help.

Even in game it will show it’s using the Microsoft basic display driver.

Disable the integrated display adapter in the bios?

Definitely this. GD will take random stabs that may work or make things worse. Tech forum is best place for this.

Got it, I’ll do that

I think you got to go into the Nvidia control panel and select the rtx 2070 for your programs. Some times windows uses your igpu by default.

First, you have to make sure you have the Nvidia driver installed.

If you right click on the desktop ( anywhere… just use a random spot there) and see something like “nvidia control panel… or anything nvidia in the right click options” you have it installed.

To run a game with dedicated graphics, right click the .exe or icon file and select “run with…” and then select your dedicated card.

There are other things to try out, but that’s the quick version

Yeah OP, this is probably the direction you’ll want to look in.

One thing to note though is that you don’t want to force use of the 2070 at all times, only when playing WoW and other games. Using the 2070 for normal desktop stuff like a web browser will absolutely annihilate your battery life.
