while i need to take it apart anyway, what do you think i should upgrade while open - at the same time? i’m thinking the SSD from 228G o 1T.
MSI GS 73 VR 6RF Stealth Pro
intel core i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.6GHz
16.0 GB RAM
64 bit operating system
238 GB SSD
1T HHD
purchased in July 2016
Thanks
Probably still viable, but I would get that fan replaced for sure.
An SSD upgrade wouldn’t hurt.
I suggest cloning if you have another computer.

Not a good source on that, but at least yours makes noise. I drunkly b*tch slapped my laptop a few years ago and long story short I have to set up a table fan next to it or Chernobyl will happen.

That hard drive is too small. Upgrade it.

Thanks all for the help. ya i’ll look into cloning then replacing the SSD. i guess no point in upgrading the RAM?
How is 238g ssd not enough? How many -explicit videos- does the normal person have on their computer? I have a 250gb and its only half full.
give laptop away to a person in need ; get yourself a desktop
*once the 3000 series are restocked i guess
I’m not 100% positive, but if you’ve never gotten into the inside of this thing before that you may want to look into it first. I know on some those MSI thin and light laptops their mainboard placement is kinda wonky - IE you have to remove the back panel and then the mainboard itself as all those components are on the other side.
Kind’ve a chore and a PITA due to cable connections and what not.

Easier to fill up than you think, once you start collecting. My 1TB M.2 is 3/4 filled with the OS and programs. 4TB the same for data storage, music, movies, and other various stuff I’ve had since I bought my first Packard Bell 150 MHz Pentium. A 10TB to back it all up. But I’m a pack rat, need a sound blaster 16 driver?

If you play more games than just WoW it can go pretty quick. For example, XCOM 2 is ~77GB, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is ~60GB, and my WoW install is ~84GB. With just those three, if you have a 238GB drive you’re down to ~17GB left for everything else you might want (including your OS).

Most of my games are on D: (a 500GM 860 EVO) and it’s 75% filled… WoW, EVE, BDO and SWTOR take up a fair amount of space.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 takes up close to 150g on one of my M.2s by itself.
Decent laptop and has a pretty sweet GPU to boot.

The harddrive in the device is worth replacing with an SSD. Fewer moving parts, faster and they’re more affordable nowadays. I’d also check if your existing SSD is coming to the end of it’s days using any disk information of your flavour - this is unlikely but you may as well check and save yourself opening it twice.

That particular laptop is not bad in terms of accessibility (of the HDD, rest suck :s) but it does have two ribbon cables going over the top of your HDD which you’ll need to be careful when handling.

I’d confirm if you have dual channel memory. Both 16GB and 32GB are fine at least for a fair amount of time in my opinion but if you have a single 16GB in there, you’ll benefit from boosting that up to 32GB (better to get a 16GB-2400Mhzx2 kit).

The maximum memory frequency supported as per the userguide is DDR4 2400Mhz. If this is correct you’d be wasting your money getting anything faster.
Overall, pretty decent computer that’ll get you through Shadowlands at a 6/7 + default settings easily. I’m using a RX Vega M GH which was released about a year and a little later with no issues, minding the fact it doesn’t have the same restrictions that a laptop does.

… are you trolling right now? Wtf? LOL
Three MMOs took up 209gb, dude. No one downloads prn anymore. What a stupid statement.
no I’m not trolling I was actually curious, I have only wow saved on my ssd the rest is on my hdd i found it odd why it would be absolutely necessary to have a larger ssd
Next time ask like a normal person instead of bringing prn into it.
Not everyone has two hard drives. Think, McFly.

The harddrive that comes default in the system is clocked at 5400 making it pretty abysmal to run games off. It’d probably be worth replacing anyway.

Take out the fan. Dust it completely. Add Motorkote to the bearings.
My computer fan used to make so much noise it made it sound like a gasoline powered engine. Motorkote on the bearings made it sound at least 50% quiter.
Won’t fix it 100%, but it will most certainly make a noticeable difference.

That’s a pretty fancy laptop you have there if it lets you upgrade some of its parts. Will it take an M.2?
One M.2 and one 2.5 inch sata slots are used for storage.
