Lag When Alt Tabbed

When I alt tab my entire computer drops to like 20fps when I try to do things in my browser (Tried multiple) even going through my files on PC. I tried switching to DX11, but that makes MoP classic run at like 30fps.

It’s because there is literally a graphics setting that lowers your FPS when the game is in the backgroup (when you alt+tab). It’s in the game graphics settings.

The more you know

You should set the target fps, max foreground fps, and max background fps to your monitor refresh rate or slightly higher. If you don’t have a max foreground FPS set it will stress your GPU and generate way to many frames for no reason.

Also turn off vertical sync. It can cause weird things to happen if your FPS dips. You probably would rather have tearing than 15 fps. If your FPS dips, vertical sync cuts it down to the next number that can be evenly divided into your monitor refresh rate which is 30 fps then 15 fps if you run 60 hz.

You can also try running in full screen vs windowed.

I had this issue briefly as well when some updates were pushed to my PC but disabling v-sync fixed it for me and also after I restarted.

FYI I’m running LInux so this may or may not be your issue. It sounds like it’s similar.

My PC is a beast so I knew it wasn’t my PC. I got the fastest CPU you can buy and a 4070. It was a driver or some software.

Classic can run on a toaster.

You can try graphics level 3 which seems low but is Vanilla level graphics. You don’t need higher. Level 3 gives you authentic experience.

I think Blizzard may have changed something in the game because I never have had issues in the past. They are constantly updating the client to be closer to retail and they keep breaking things.

It’s probably not your PC.

I couldn’t even launch the game a few weeks ago because they broke the launcher on Linux with updates.
