Lag in Game: FPS 100+ / MS 25-30

First of all, sorry if my explanation is poor. This has been happening since this evening during a world quest. I was doing the tortollan inscribe WQ in Nazmir where I have to trace a Circle. I traced the gold outlining almost perfectly but when it returned my results in blue outline it was the shape of a Square!

I noticed that my FPS was 90 and when I would tab off the WoW.exe and use Google I notice Elvui would show my FPS in WoW as 30—but when I tabbed back to WoW.exe my FPS would jump to 90-115.

I thought it could be my ISP so I launched another game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, to see if I was lagging in that game too. Probably not the best way to determine where the issue is coming from but the result was no lag when playing in CoD.

I don’t believe its my computer equipment as I usually run raids at Graphic Quality 7 with no issues. If someone could reach out to me and help me determine where the fault is, that would be great. I’ll work with the tech if I need to provide more information.

Hi Castaway

From the looks of this I would test the UI. If this test doesn’t help you can return your original settings afterwards.

**Important First Step - If you have the Curse/Twitch - ElvUI/Tukui or similar addon manager/installer - temporarily uninstall. (Those will interfere with the test)

Close game completely. Navigate to the main Wow folder > retail folder. Rename the Cache, Interface and WTF folders to .old — Cache.old - Interface.old - WTF.old

The game will install new folders on launch. Test with a new UI and no addons. If that didn’t work simply remove the .old from your original folders and delete the new ones the Launcher installed. (This returns your previous settings as they were)

Hi Tratt.

Thank you for the test.

  • I uninstalled Twitch
  • Closed the game completely.
  • Renamed folders to Cache.old, Interface.old, WTF.old
  • Launched WoW

I found that it did not work as the game still shows 100 FPS with 27 ms (home) 31 ms (world).

Alright - next step would be to take a look at a DXDiag report see what shows up there.

The second section of page has DXDiag report instructions - we don’t require the MSinfo report.

That will be a wall of text. If you have issues pasting on the Forum here go ahead and put it up on pastebin.com. Provide the link code portion of the URL - example below.

(The green bold portion at the end of this example link: https://pastebin.com/**Qk28Ed1P** <=== this code)

Alternately you can place the link in a Preformatted Text box. Paste the link in the chatbox - then highlight it. Click the preformatted text button along the top of the chatbox - looks like this </>

Will look like this example afterwards:

I re-installed WoW overnight and this morning it seems to be working properly.

Good to see - thanks for reporting back.

TL;DR version - Experienced similar massive lag starting yesterday, left a large community, then the lag disappeared.

Ran into similar behavior on my Horde mage. I’m usually 30/30 ms. It started yesterday afternoon right before the super bowl. Jumped on this morning and still experiencing up to 26 second lag doing things like:

  • Keyword search in auction house
  • Filter search in auction house
  • Casting arcane intellect
  • Casting create mana bun
  • Deleting a mana bun from inventory
  • Retrieving mail and it appearing in my inventory

Moved the Cache, Interface and WTF directories. Restart Windows, restart WoW, same lag occurs.

Was going what could be different on this toon? Only thing that came to mind was I’m in a large community channel. So jumped on an Alliance toon I hadn’t played in ages and isn’t in a community. Tried auction house searches and the response time was instant.

Jumped back on Horde toon and casting arcane intellect was instant. Closed WoW, restarted, and casting arcane intellect was still lagging (10 seconds) and conjure mana bun (20 seconds for it to appear in inventory).

Left community, closed WoW, restarted. Casting arcane intellect was instant. Casting conjure mana bun and it was instant for the item to appear in inventory. Auction house searches were instant now.

Repeated close WoW, restart, and cast test and auction house searches 3 times. All are instant now.

Hi Lovetoocute

Have you tried to go back to that community channel to test. If you are still lagging while there I would try a network device power cycle.

Shutdown computer - unplug the router/modem from wall power outlet. Leave unplugged for a few minutes. Plug back in then wait for things to sort themselves out. (couple minutes). Startup computer.
