Does anybody else find it frustrating that anything outside of instances is doomed to triviality and near total irrelevance about a month after the expansion or patch that added it?
Maybe I’m in the minority, but I found it fun when world elites were common, and sometimes even one of the better options when grinding some things (like in Vanilla, grinding Tyr’s Hand elite crusaders for gold, vendor trash, and Runecloth). Managing elite enemies that are dangerous enough that a misstep could bring you close to death requires a bit of a different skillset than that required for instanced group play, and usually requires the player use a wider swath of their class toolkit (no tank to take the hits, healer to save you from standing in fire, or fellow DPS to cleanse debuffs).
It’s a muscle that doesn’t get exercised often in the modern game. You get occasional pockets of elites like the desert pocket in Zerith Mortis, but those are pretty rare and while still relevant, so overrun with other players that the danger/challenge is greatly dampened and sometimes quest items to nerf the elites into harmless kittens.
I would find it so nice to have options like heroic/mythic Chromie Time for leveling and perhaps a heroic/mythic max level world too. Would anybody else here find those things enjoyable?
They were fun back in the day, I enjoyed soloing elites when I didn’t have a list of chores to do
No But that doesn’t mean I don’t think they should be added, they can certainly add it for people that want it as long as I can opt to stay in my trivial world
Yeah I really miss the “outdoor dungeon” areas with mob density and elites that you have to work through so you can kill a quest elite. They sort of had that one area in the maw but the whole zone was super boring
When they’ve tried making parts of the open world more challenging, they get nothing but complaints. Think The Maw, or the northeastern part of Suramar.
I always thought it would be cool to make end game zones feel like end game zones, not just another zone that gives you loot.
They got close by adding a bunch of rares with scaling, but if you can solo it with no one else around that isnt engaging at all. Even with scaling you can have a bunch of brain-dead dolts standing still and kill every one of them. Does it have to be mythic level hard? No, but adding some quests to summon boss level enemies that can be 5-10 manned would be cool. Does it have to be punishing? No. If you fail, make the item usable again until you kill it.
Another thought that I had is that if the world had harder modes that could be enabled, I’d feel more motivated to gear up through M+ and raiding — presently the gear from those is mostly only good for obtaining more gear, which is a bit too circular for my taste. With heroic/mythic world modes that gear would also be useful when not behind an instance portal.
Probably the mistake there is the level of optionality. They could let all mobs in the “normal” phase keel over from a brisk sneeze, leaving the elites to heroic/mythic modes.
Yeah, the disconnect between the supposed danger of endgame zones vs. their actual danger has felt pretty crummy for a long time now, with The Maw probably being the best example yet. It wasn’t dangerous, it was dull. I think the closest we’ve had to this idea is maybe Eastern Plaguelands, which still felt moderately dangerous at 60 as well as the various elite areas that endgame raiders needed to visit back then (like southern Winterspring with the elite ice giants and demons or that gray demon area next to the Dark Portal).
Yeah scaling only produces damage sponge mobs that take ten years to kill, and aren’t particularly menacing. 100% the wrong kind of elite.
Thats why modern WoW is better. You dont scavenge for grey items which is too grindy. You just get your Callings done and you would have adequate amount of gold.
Just do the dungeons especially on PuGs. You would have scenarios where your incompetent team mates die or even your tank dies and you have to start using all your toolkit to survive and kill dying mobs.
That’s what i like on PuGing. I could make a bad group win.
Btw, on World PvE, i am very unkillable. If i have some hiccups of pulling a Boss or mobs that i cant kill, i just pull my pet as dummy to run and feign death.
Btw, i love the Maw when it was new and when you have a quest at the center of elites. Your timer ticks and you lose all Stygia when you die, i love it. Of course, whiners whine. They expect Maw to be easy. Maw depicts Hell and it’s on point… very cruel and very unforgiving. After the nerf, it became a joke.
i do. i mean it’s not so bad for people who can solo it and what not but for those of us who are far behind and trying to do that content for w.e. reasons finding groups that late can be hell even if we form our own.
few times already tried doing WB’s can’t find groups and when forming one not many people join. usually have to end up flying back, turn off wm, fly back to the spot and wait and hope a large group that can do it just to tag.
just my 2c though. i like harder outdoor content in general. feels more immersive to me but in the end i don’t think it would fix the issue anyways unless the content say that im currently doing is something many others are also doing as well otherwise i’d just get the same issue if anything it would be even worse at that point
Outdoor content is designed to be clearable by 100% of the playerbase, last time they try to make such content challenging, WOW lose their game director for it.
Yeah, the maw was supposed to be everything everyone ever said they wanted.
Dangerous mobs, limited safe areas, roads that aren’t always clear, punishment for death, no flying. They even added some extra flavour in top; a more realistic experience of what would happen if you spent too long taking dumps in the BBEGs backyard - he starts sending death squads.
I’ve been hearing for years how wow is too easy, not threatening and people can just run or fly past anything that would even remotely slow them.
I miss the old “Outdoor Dungeon” Concept Blizzard used to use back in Vanilla. Tyr’s Hand and the Deadmines section before you get into the instance. The mobs in those places had better rewards and was fun to farm them.
If you want your playstyle to reward gear that trivializes all other content, please don’t complain that the content aimed at other playstyles is trivial for you.
( note: trying to better understand the OP’s playstyle from his profile has left me a little confused; I had assumed a challenge-seeker would be more involved in current 3-pillars content rather than seeking it only from the open world )
( unless this is just an alt with account-wide achievements hidden? I don’t want to make any bad assumptions about a person’s playstyle while trying to better understand them )
I like some challenge, but if they did what youre asking about this forum would pop a cork with the “I dont feel like Im getting stronger” crap.
End of expansion they expect the game to be easy to play now.
