In the last stress test, it was difficult to find quest mobs, as well as enough L1-5 mobs to kill to grind up those first levels, with hundreds of people around. I found a gentleman who made a video of his dwarf hunter hitting level 5 through a certain route of exploration and Fed Ex quests, at about the 50 minute level. As a bonus, he got a half dozen important flight points as well. For at least my first character on Aug 26, in the chaos or a nascent server, I plan to do exactly that, run my short little dwarven legs off the first hour, get to 5, and then go wreak havoc on Dun Morogh. Whats your plan?
would probably have better luck grouping and leaving the starting zone and killing a bunch of lvl 6 mobs as 5 level 1’s.
I think another good initial thing to do is grab a fishing pole and fish the pond next to Goldshire, without lures. Your first 20 or so casts will mostly net you grey items worth between 18c and 1s. Fish for a half hour and get enough money for a bag or three, as well as the some good basic cooking mats.
Maybe you can get that much loot fishing on private servers, but not in Classic. I fished up to skill level 75 on the Beta and got nowhere near that much loot.
Having said that, I just recently created my own Alliance Exploration Leveling Guide:

Can’t you not get fishing until level 5?
im going human mage, just do the kobold quest in a group so you get the kills. Grind mobs until 3 or 4. Go to goldshire and grind until 5, preferably will a partner. Then you should skip the mine quests and do the rest of elwyn.
This is what I’ll be doing.
I’m going either Orc or Undead first but either way I’m getting UC, Sepulcher and Tarren Mill on EK and Org, X Roads, Ratchet, Camp T and TB in Kalimdor.
