Knowledge Points?

Hi, I’ve been away from the game for quite awhile but I’m back now. I really enjoy leveling gathering professions but I don’t quite understand how to reliably get knowledge points. Do you know of any accessible guides that explain how to get knowledge points. It’s kind of frustrating. I have heard of some 1 time activities like finding stuff in the world. Am I able to keep getting knowledge points by just mining and herbing?

Thank you!

For gathering, there should be a weekly quest to turn in some mats for a few points. Then you can get items while gathering that give KP. Usually you get 5 blue drops first that each give 1 point, then a final purple item that gives 2 or 3. After that, if you are behind you can continue to gather random drops now and then from nodes that will give a point. But I think maybe before those will drop, you have to have the other weekly KP done.

You can also use a treatise crafted by scribes once per week, and I believe drops from disturbed earth out in the zones. You should see those as little dirt piles with a purple outline.

WoWHead should have comprehensive guide, I’m sure I’m forgetting things.

Midnight will start fresh with both skill and KP; any KP you get now in TWW gathering skills will only apply to TWW. So it may or may not be worth worrying too much about right now, depending on your goals.

I used this guide to catch up on profs for several alts, it lists all KP sources and how to find them: https://www.wow-professions.com/guides/the-war-within/weekly-profession-knowledge-points

Make sure to check the subguides for one-time vendor items and professions treasures, you can easily get like 60+ KP just from that to start with

For gathering professions you do the weekly at your profession trainer, loot 2 items that grant knowledge points from treasures or piles of wax in khaz’algar, then you just farm ore/herbs/skins and knowledge drops occasionally.
There’s a “cap” on how many knowledge points you can have that increases each week throughout the expansion, and for each week you’re short of the cap you can earn catchup knowledge points, which for gathering professions you do by gathering so nothing changes (I believe you need to do the 2 treasure sources and the trainer hand in quest to be eligible for catchup knowledge points every week but I’m not 100% on that).
