Knowing how to gear oneself properly

What’s the trick to this? Choosing gear seems like such an unintuitive task these days, with higher ilvl not always equating to better gear. Is there a go-to site the community uses with ranked slot lists or what?

It can be hit or miss depending on class/spec, but you could try askmrrobot .com

Looks nice and I’ll definitely give it a shot, but it looks like most of its good features are paid? Surely most players don’t pay for something like this…

/simc, that’s it basically

I dabbled with sims for a bit but couldn’t make heads or tails of what I was looking at.

Basically insert the /simc into raidbots on “top gear”, then click all the gear you want to check. Use patchwerk for your ST DPS and hectic add cleave or dungeon slice for your AoE. After it’s done running, the highlighted gear is gear different from what you’re wearing that you should equip

Install Pawn, sim your statweights on Raidbots and paste the string into Pawn, and install the Azerite helper addon.

Not the most scientific way, but it is better than nothing. After you import the weights (which is very intuitive), it practically calculates itself.

Trinkets? Don’t bother, just look up a BIS list or something.

Ask Mr. Robot’s best-in-bags feature is only $12 per year.

add on called Pawn can also help

It will show with a little green arrow up what gear is better…as it deems it anyway.

Reliable for armour, weapons, and rings imo. It does not always go best ilevel. As best ilevel may not always be best.

for on your own, look up the DPS guides on say wow head or icy veins for your class/spec. They can give the lists of 1-4 stat priority. If better ilevel item is boosting your 4th stat…then decide if worth it over a lower ilevel that hits primary or secondary.

Whatever stats your spec needs is what you wear. Dont look at Ilevel.

Compare each new at-ilevel piece against the one you’re wearing using ask Mr. Robot. If you don’t want to go thru that process everytime you get a piece, just check the caps/priorities on stats and change out gear depending what you still need.

Here’s how I do it:

  • Download and install the Pawn addon.
  • Download the latest Sim(ulation)craft build.
  • Copy your character’s Pawn string and run it in Simcraft to get results.
  • Switch gear/talents around in-game and copy the new Pawn string to run in Simcraft to see what’s an upgrade and what’s not. Repeat as many time as you’d like.
  • Set Simcraft to create stat weights for you and run a simulation to determine your secondary stat order.

Pawn addon! How did I forget that.

slaps self

Pawn only works as long as you keep your pawn string up to date. You’re better simming with raidbots

Thanks all, will give this all a shot.

Seems a little crazy that any of this is necessary, though. What ever happened to just keeping 2-3 stat caps in mind and memorizing your rotation?

With some classes you can go mostly on stat weights, but sometimes there are break points and whatnot that will mess with your stat weights. On my fire mage, where stat weights are quite close, my top simming stat kept changing

As you can see based on the various options - you likely are best suited using an external companies website (which has paid options) to answer your question.

I hate that the system is so complicated that this is required, but until blizzard develops some kind of internal dps calculation system, these methods are the only thing we really have.

That, or spend thousands in gold testing all of the azerite trait/ stat combinations to see what’s best by yourself.
