Imagine eye tracking tech in tandem with tab targeting. Pressing tab just targets exactly what you are looking at. That would be amazing! One of the worst feelings in the world is pressing tab and targeting something a million miles away.
Does the tracking tech actually work well enough to be used like that? I’ve never used it myself but the videos/demos I’ve seen don’t seem very precise.
I think a couple hundred years down the road when everyone upgrades their toaster, then maybe. Would be cool.
That would be cool, except when I’m watching TV while thumbing through predictable rotations.
Oh I would pull everything on my hunter.
I can’t half see so tbh… I just kind of stare off sometimes.
That would make it even worse. Generally, you are trying to keep track of multiple things at once in this game, your targeting would be all over the dang place lol.
If there’s a way to do that on PCs without a webcam, and without the potential privacy issues, sure.
My eyes are already flying around the screen to keep track of positioning, buffs, targets, group/raid status, and my cursor’s location.
I’d have an aneurysm.
I’ve seen programs that indicate where your eyes are focused on the screen (usually for nefarious purposes), maybe that could be reverse engineered/adapted to some device for targeting. Those F-35 targeting helmets only cost $400,000 smackers. Pilot specific so .gov putting a lot of money in them.
Does eye tracking work well enough to pick out exactly what you want to target? Almost certainly not. But it can pick out the screen region your target is in and prioritize the tab target to new targets in that screen region rather than those outside it.
I know Preach did a video a long time ago where he used eye tracking software to see where his focus was in game. Recorded himself doing Underot with eye tracking and realizing his UI was not as optimal as he thought.
I see a lot of yall saying “I am looking everywhere, wouldn’t work” but like… why would that matter? You only need to be looking at what you want to target when you tab then you can look wherever else. I don’t see why that would be a problem.
As for the “privacy” comments… I really doubt you got anything going on that the government wants to see. They have literally a million better things to do than watch any of us WoW nerds using eye tracking in a game haha.
If you think WoW’s tab targeting is bad, you obviously haven’t played FF14. WoW’s tab target focuses on mobs your camera is looking at first. There’s no rhyme or reason behind FF14’s tab targeting.
I… am not sure what FFXIV has to do with any of this, but okay…?
I’m saying that WoW’s tab targeting is better than it’s competitors.
