Kinda sucks that Discord plays such a big role in guilds

Talking in voice chat gives me tons of anxiety and listen to all the unrelated stuff annoys me. Don’t even get me started on pug discords. It kind of sucks that most do most of their socializing in discord.

Not really asking for a change or anything, that is all

Good lord…

Guilds have been using voice chat services long before Discord and long before WoW.

Discord is a bit different than things like Vent tho.

At least in my experience, Vent was used mostly just for grouping, while Discord in my experience kind of takes the place of guild chat

Na, you remember wrong

Discord is pervasive. Vent wasn’t big enough to be that pervasive.

Just tell people you’re deaf, that way you don’t have to discord.

I feel ya. I miss out on quite a bit because most of the socializing happens in Discord and I don’t want to have a bunch of internet people nattering in my ear the whole time I’m trying to play. But I’ve been in big social guilds before and the constant scrolling offtopic /g text can also be pretty annoying. In balance, I’m ok with being more or less disconnected from it and only jumping into voice for raids or keys.

Every guild I have been in used vent (now Discord) as a major means of socializing even not while grouping. Has been like this since Vanilla. Sure people will shoot the breeze in guild chat, but they are usually in voice as well and that is usually where most of the people hung out even when playing other games.

I have really bad anxiety too, OP.

A lot of guild discords aren’t really that heavy on VC, though. It’s mostly the text channels people heavily frequent.

I just dont use it. No guild has ever made me. Some pugs will, if you need voice chat for keys then I dont even try coming in, I hate talking to randoms. Keys dont even require voice chat

I feel you, OP. Discord is annoying. I don’t mind listening in for raids but that’s about it.

I’ve left groups and guilds for requiring me to be on discord/vent/whatever favorite program of the moment was for requiring me to be on chat for trivial content. I don’t like it either man. If we aren’t friends, why would I want to be chatting?

I don’t even have a mic at home (but I do have a very bad cat) and I just listen. Sure it is Classic, but I haven’t had problems yet.

Not all guilds do this.

My previous guild and my current guild used guild chat primarily, and Discord when something like a dungeon or raid is going on.

Most of us don’t need to be talking every second while we play.

I found it happened before Discord anyway. I sometimes don’t mind going on chat, but I don’t tend to talk on voice much.

One of my old guilds got convinced by my friends that I had a strong Asian accent and was embarrassed about it, and me trying to explain that I simply didn’t own a mic at the time only made them believe me less.

Discord is the best. This is a million times better than Teamspeak, Vent, Mumble or whatever else we used to work with.

Join the pug disc if you have to, then quit.

Pro tip if you don’t like chatting with your guildies…find a new guild

Discord didn’t change anything regarding voice chat. Voice chat is used just as much today as it was over 10 years ago.

What I find Discord has changed though, is that it’s become somewhat of a replacement for guild websites/forums. This has typically been a good thing.
