TL;DR this guy is a 610 ilvl, 1800 rating prot paladin applying for +7 and +8 keys. Should be ezpz for him, but he is getting declined for not being a DH or warrior.
That is insane. The people in this game who are slaves to the meta have gone absolutely way too far with this. There is absolutely no reason you should be declining a tank of all roles for “not being meta” in anything below like a +10. Y’all are WILD.
that one guy declined a guy for being a prot pally and literally everyone else is wild
okay lol
I mean, it’s a stupid reason to decline someone from a non bleeding edge key. a prot pally is perfectly capable of doing a +7, but the guy who builds the group gets to be the guy who decides who goes.
be the guy who builds the group
not the guy who depends on others whether they game or not
There’s nothing wrong with that, but as a community it is wild to care about that in lower keys. The meta exists for higher keys, it doesn’t apply for lower keys.
But everyone takes it as gospel across all key levels and that’s where the community has gone too far. It’s become a hindrance on people’s ability to just play the game because people have weird misconceptions on how viable a class/spec is in content where none of that even matters.
At that point they genuinely don’t even realize they are making it worse for themselves by declining tanks that aren’t “meta” and making it take longer to find a tank for genuinely no reason at all.
Like if this is something anyone or someone else has done, please just stop, you are being dumb.
That’s why MMOs are a slowly dieing breed. The “meta” is being controlled by media like WoWheads and IcyVeins, etc. Than after you have those 30+ years old gamers playing WoW being influenced by streamers and what not,LMAO, than they think they know everything and gatekeep the game like it’s never been seen in any other gaming communities. Even more competitive games like League of Legends and Valorant aren’t gatekeeping as much as WoW, maybe in like the 0.5% of top ranked match, but even then people adapt to non-meta comps. So in conclusion, keep gatekeeping WoW but don’t cry when the game is on a steady decline or that they don’t put anymore budget on making it a better experience, because why would they do.
That’s something that only the people who don’t like the meta focus can change by starting more groups or doing more to get organized teams together in guilds communities or discords.
That is true, but I think what really grinds my gears the most is that people just look at a tier list for M+ on WoWhead and that’s just magically what the “meta” is, regardless of how many balance patches have happened when the tier list was released or if it was even updated after that and is completely wrong and out of date now.
Doesn’t matter, all hail the WoWhead tier list, it is law and we must follow it exactly lol
It’s impossible to destroy the meta without developers setting up some system that meddles with permitted group compositions or something like that, and at that point all it does is shift the meta in another direction. This is because the meta is the game pared down to its mechanics and interactions.
Beyond that you would have to push people toward not caring about optimization in a game mode that’s essentially speedrunning, the soul of which is optimization. As long as that remains the case, even in lower keys will you see people lean in favor of meta classes and comps assuming all else is equal on the applicant list.
If Blizzard were better with class parity it wouldn’t be such an issue. Part of the problem is how varied gear is, and another part is how diverse classes are in how they function. Fire Mage being so reliant on secondary stats, Mistweaver falling off later in an expansion for the inverse problem, these sort of things hinder the game in terms of what becomes meta at any given time.
A meta isn’t bad, though. The problem is that the community at large takes it to mean more than it does. While I complain about class parity, even in the worst case scenarios, all classes are viable.
I bet there’s a ton of great players that will never play M+ because it’s gate happy. In fact, they probably get a lot of people that may be worse in pugs, just because they’re hyper sensitive to ilvl, and ilvl isn’t really hard to get right now. You can be really lucky and have a high ilvl, but aren’t great at the game.
