Keyboard Movement Issue After Patch (Linux / Ubuntu)

EDIT: I found the problem to be the GPU somehow. Turned down the graphics from 6 to 4 with a few tweaks on quality (from Fair to Good) and the issue is gone. Maybe the Liquorix Kernel is not working fine with my GPU while playing WoW. Got to test with the default Kernel first.

I’m back playing WoW retail on my Dell laptop , amd64, only now using Ubuntu 20.04 along with Liquorix Kernel and Wine Staging v5.19 (Gamemode and E-Sync are ON ). I use a Bluetooth mouse and all my drivers are up to date.

I’ve installed the game a few weeks ago before the pre-Shadowlands patches and it was running smoothly with no issues at all. After two to three heavy patches since the last 13th, changing the game’s appearance including characters customization and all, I’ve started having this weird movement problem.

By using AWSD or arrow keys on my laptop keyboard, the character keeps running even after releasing the key and simply won’t stop for many seconds after . Meanwhile, ESC or jumping doesn’t work, or any other shortcuts to help stop it. Seems to be directly related to the mouse camera movement.

I’ve researched for a solution and came across some tweaks listed bellow but none worked for me

  • Change Wine version : the only one working right now is Staging 5.19, preventing the game from crashing;
  • Repair and Full Re-installation : deleted folders and downloaded from Lutris, didn’t work
  • Rename WTF, Config and other folders ;
  • Using in-game the command /script SetCVar(“rawMouseEnable”, 1);
  • Using the command /console RawMouseEnable 1 (also 0 value);
  • Enable Lock Cursor to Window in-game ;
  • Turning on the option ‘Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows’ in Winecfg

I’ve tried running WoW with the Battle.net app and directly from the .exe file - both using Lutris. Nothing.

This never happened before and my laptop keyboard is working just fine. Other games on Lutris via Wine are also working without problems.

Does anyone have any ideas? Maybe could be the Liquorix Kernel for some reason? Maybe a conflict between the new patches and Wine Staging 5.19 ?

Any help would be very much appreciated!

PS. I’ve noticed a folder on my /home/ directory called GPUCache that apparently was created by WoW. Unaware of it, I have deleted the folder. Now I notice some additional lag loading the character selection screen and when entering the world. Could this be related? Is there a way to recover it if it is necessary?

Hey Gothmog

I would never pretend to know anything Linux. I have a suggestion though - edit your header with Linux. That might draw the attention of other Linux users on the forum here. That seems like a helpful community.

The one recent thread I recall is this one - not sure if anything of use there:

Hey Tratt

Thanks for your message! I would totally agree with you if this was just a Linux issue. I’ve found many Windows and Mac users reporting the same thing in years or months before. I believe labeling this thread Linux might divert the topic.

EDIT: Just updated the title for it may be an issue with Ubuntu. Thanks again @Tratt

I see something like this problem only when I’m running Wine/WoW under GNOME. It got so bad that I ended up switching to another desktop environment altogether. Though you may not want to go this route, perhaps it’s a datapoint that could be relevant.

I’ve seen mouse issues and the odd camera issue since the patch. I don’t recall anything similar to what you report Gothmog. Most of the issues I have seen were UI - addon related. Looks like you have that covered already.

Hey, Stevner. Thanks for your reply!

That’s really lame to know. I really enjoy GNOME DE and it was working just fine. Got to have hope that this is something else. By the way, what distro and DE do you use?

@Tratt I found some issues just like that too. Particularly about keyboard, I’ve found some from months ago. Most of those were about running a different version of Wine on Lutris. The problem is that for now only the Staging 5.19 version (the lastest) is working with WoW retail. And yes, I don’t have any addons on my account. :confused:

I’ve been using Gentoo ever since I started WoW, and currently use XFCE DE though I keep Gnome 3 installed. I was initially using Gnome 2, when it was still around not as Mate DE, worked fine with Wine/WoW. I’ve yet to find some workaround or fix for Gnome 3, been having this problem with it since I tried it.

You’re the first report of this behavior that I’ve seen so I’m kind of glad I’m not the only one, been thinking I had some sort of one off problem somehow, but still have the feeling there’s something else involved since it was working for you prior to this patch. I’ve never had Gnome3 work all the time - sometimes it would work but often the keyboard would “stick” and I’d careen down a mountainside.

I must say that my first experience with Linux using Ubuntu 20.04 is being great. I love the GNOME 3 interface style. Yes, it could be even smoother, not requiring more RAM than KDE, for example, but the usability is pretty good.

I read a lot about gaming in Linux and never appeared to me issues regarding Ubuntu or GNOME DE. I tried to install KDE here and use it along with GNOME on the same system but I thought it to be confusing and deleted every trace of it. I was thinking about trying XFCE indeed but have the same fear.

The real strange thing is that WoW was not behaving like that before those pre-Shadowlands patches. I’m hoping that a Hotfix will come and solve this issues within the next weeks.
