Almost every time I run WoW, I get the “Your World of Warcraft installation is damaged” error message.
So I do Scan & Repair. It scans, then comes back with “Whoops. Looks like something broke.” And it lists error message BLZBNTAGT00000BB8.
Then the big blue button says Update. Click that, the game downloads some files, and it runs.
Then the next time, the whole process starts over again.
WoW can’t be updating several times a day, can it?
Hey there Snowflake! We appreciate you taking the time to reach out regarding that endless loop of scanning and updating the game. You are correct in presuming that this is not normal behavior with the App. This can be caused by a variety of things such as a conflicting third-party program, corrupted local files, or in rare cases a deeper problem with the Windows installation. Try the following to narrow this down a bit:
-
Fully update or temporarily uninstall security programs which may be interfering with the Battle.net Desktop App. More information on troubleshooting security applications here, if curious.
-
Reinstall the Battle.net Desktop App.
-
Once reinstalled, try clearing the “Indicies” for the game, which should force the Battle.net app to scan the game files and resume the update:
- Open the Blizzard Battle.net desktop app.
- Select the game in the list on the left.
- Click Options and select Show in Explorer.
- Open the World of Warcraft folder, and then open the Data folder.
- Delete every *.IDX file in the data folder (Note: Do not delete any of the Data.### files.).
- Return to the Battle.net app and click Options > Scan and Repair.
If you continue to experience issues, many problems related to your installation of Windows can be resolved by creating a new administrator account, logging into it, and trying the Battle.net Desktop App there.
If the game and App only work consistently on the new admin account, it means that the old account is broken or corrupted in some way. This is somewhat common, and the easiest fix is to move any user-specific files that you wish to keep from the old user account to the new admin account. You can also work with Microsoft’s Support to troubleshoot the problem with the old account if preferred.
I hope this helps! Let us know how it goes.
Deleting every *.IDX file broke the game. When attempting to scan & repair, it continually kept giving me the “something is broke” error message.
The only way to resolve that was to restore the deleted files.
I’ve been having this issue as well, I’ve deleted everything possible and reinstalled at least 5 times. It then appears to work for awhile then randomly “your installation is damaged”
This just started happening to me this morning. i logged out fine last night around 10pm and now it keeps saying there is an update. when i click it, it just does a scan and repair and breaks. i have tried all the steps above except reinstall a game that’s 130gb when my net is poor, this has to be some sort of server side issue. Error "whoops! looks like something broke. give it another shot. Error #BLZBNTAGT00000BB8
the only helpful info i found for my situation is that I was running the game from a 2TB external harddrive and apparently thats not supported anymore and has to be internal
same here woke up to my game saying i needed to repair my game now it is stuck in a constant loop… Uninstalled the game lets see if that fixes it

I also have had this issue and even uninstalled the game twice and it still happens. It seems to happen at least once or twice a day and when scanning and gets to the end I get an error. So annoying. Even tried without addons and it still does this.
Hey all,
If the workaround posted by Skelgarer isn’t helping, the best solution would be the following:
-
Uninstall all versions of World of Warcraft (PTR, Beta, Classic, Retail, etc)
- Reinstall the Battle.net desktop app
- Install a clean copy of only retail or classic, whichever is preferred for active play
I know it’s not the fastest solution but will be the most effective overall.
if only this actually worked, there is something wrong with the latest files because it constantly puts me into an endless cycle of something is broken > repair > something is broken > repair
Reinstalling Battle.net did not resolve the problem.
That’s going to be a problem. I have an draconian data limit. Can’t download the entire game without it taking two months of data allowance.

Uninstalling both the game and battle net did not resolve the problem. I have uninstalled three different times too.
It’s your guys’ doodoo shadowlands pre-patch that broke the game for a lot of us. This isn’t the first topic regarding this issue. I have been getting it ever since the pre-patch launched, whereas before everything ran just fine. And now it has devolved to the point where I can’t even log onto a particular character of mine. With the anniversary event going I was going to finish leveling my Death Knight on Korgath. However, when I go to log onto the Death Knight, I get a streamer error that breaks the launcher/game and forces me to scan/repair/update. My level 46 Death Knight is the only character I have where this happens. Don’t get me wrong I get streamer errored out on my other characters, but that’s typically when trying to load into a battleground or something. The DK is the only character where it happens every single time I try to log onto it.
I saw a post last week with over 350 replies of people having the same issue, and that’s not counting all the individual posts regarding the same issue. I really wish you guys would stop assuming we screwed up and look internally at what your problem is with the game. Blizzard’s been doing such a bang up job with WoW as of late, I think it’s safe to assume that most technical issues are Blizzard-sided.

I think we have enough people saying that redownloading the game doesn’t work and it isn’t a Windows problem.
I’m still having to do a scan & repair almost every time I launch.
I am still having issues to after a clean install. Something is just not right somewhere.
I reinstalled Windows, using the Windows Media Installed (so it also upgraded me to 20H2) and I don’t have the problem anymore.
Strange that it worked for me but not for you.
As an aside, I didn’t do a clean install. I just installed over Windows 1909.
Getting the same issue here, both retail and classic are stuck in the update loop.
And…the problem is back. No changes to my computer after the reinstall. But WoW is back to breaking.

I had this issue too. I tried uninstalling all versions of World of Warcraft and the Battle.net desktop app. Uninstalling didn’t remove everything, so i manually remove the World of Warcraft folder. I also removed the Battle.net and Blizzard Entertainment folders in the ProgramData folder. I actually just moved them to the desktop just in case. I’m not even sure if that step is required. After uninstalling everything, I installed the Battle.net desktop app and retail World of Warcraft.
I’ve had 1 day with no issues. I’m hoping that’s the last I see of that error. If it comes back, I will let you know.
So it’s now 2022. I have been player of this game since beta test some 17 years ago. This issue has been around since the dawn of this game. YOu guys can’t fix it so you find the most inane, draconian ways to work around it.
17 years. multiple computers, multiple OS’s (includinga few years on Mac systems) multiple builds, multiple full installs.
THIS IS A BLIZZARD issue. It’s not our computers, it’s not our windows accounts. everytime there is a major patch you break something that causes this error to loop on people.
Fix it already eh?
