nah at that point they’ll just shutter the doors on wow and kill it rather than admit they were wrong. 6,700,000 left during wod first couple quarters and they still only PARTIALLY backtracked on it.
TBC we got it immediately at70 if we had the gold.
Wrath we got it before max level at 77 (or was it 78). You needed flying to do Storm Peaks and IC.
Cata we got it a second after the expansion launched. That was awesome especially with zones like deepholm designed completely as a flying zone.
MoP we could purchase it as soon as we hit 90.

Yeah I think it’s less about pride, per se, and more about production cost. It costs more to produce flight centric zones than it does to produce zones that aren’t flight-centric. The entire zone design and content design process is harder to do – harder to make content be as time consuming as they want it to be and to have it be flight-centric, and that increased time increases development cost. What they don’t want is to have zones that are not flight-centric have early flying available – because then people complete content more quickly than they want them to, not just in terms of what we call “time gates” (i.e., daily caps), but also in terms of “how much time are they logged in per day” metric, which decreases if flying speeds up daily task completion.
So we will have flight restricted or, as you say, we will likely have no WoW at all. I also think that even after WOD there will still quite a few players left – millions, although fewer millions than there were. If the number dropped to sub 1 million ,or sub 500k ,then they would have to make a decision.
Yes, it is months away. Usually around 3 months from patch-to-patch if Blizzard maintains their pattern.
And yes. It has been confirmed - stated by Blizzard - that flying will be in the first content patch.
