Honestly as a longtime reader of these forums the ratio of positive to negative feedback for hardcore is surprisingly high for a WoW forum. Seems people who wanted it are enjoying it for what it is.

HC is not for everyone. Expect to remake characters unless you’re lucky and/or prepared enough. Lucky meaning no technical difficulties. Prepared enough meaning you run group content with vetted people and have a plan that you can actually execute well if crap hits the fan.
Yes people who don’t work are going to level to 60 quickly compared to those who do. That kind of progression is not for everyone.
It sounds like what you want is classic era. Whitemane is very active, give it a try.

Also have a bank alt storing up gold and random greens / blues / consumables / etc so you don’t have to start from ground-zero.
Bank alts allow to have some advantage starting alts.

I work 40 hours a week with an additional 10 hours for commute time alone. I raid on retail and do community M+ keys. Beyond gaming, I have a dog and a house to maintain.
