Just a late-night idea that crossed my mind. I’ve always been a player that preferred to have one character for each class: I never liked the idea of “splitting up” my progress across multiple characters. It was a problem I remember experiencing in other games (ie. “wait, I thought I did this quest on this character, or had this item? Which characters did I do which contentr on?!”), and I figured having 1 of ever class kept things simple.
Thing is, we obviously have a ton of character races to choose from, not to mention countless transmog options to further redefine those characters.
Now, for me? When I think of “the quintessential Mage”, my mind immediately goes to Blood Elf. But really, I would maybe call it a toss up between Blood Elf, Gnomes, or now Nightborne. I wound up starting a Gnome Mage on SoD, and was surprised how much I enjoyed how different he just sort of “felt” as a character.
I mean sure, I could pay for a race change (and that’s obviously a good thing for Blizz), but it’s really no contest; much as I like Gnome Mages, they just feel a little narrow in the kind of “identity” you can really go with them.
But… what if you didn’t have to pick one or the other?
I’m sort of thinking about it like D&D or other TTRPG’s; where it’s fun making different characters, even if they’re the same class as a character you’ve already played, because you can give them a super different “feel”.
So back to my Mages, I was a huge fan of the Blood Elf campaign in WC3, so I very much keep my Blood Elf Mage in that “Blood Mage” sort of theme. But what if instead of just switching spec, where you’re the same character suddenly using completely different abilities, what if you could actually effectively “switch to” an entirely different characters?
Okay, going cross-faction might be a bit much, but I could totally see having a Blood Elf Fire Mage, a Nightborne Arcane Mage, and maybe an Undead Frost Mage? Of course, still being able to keep the same character regardless. Maybe they’re technically separate characters, but are able to link them somehow across your Warband, maybe the idea being they “hire” each other to tag-in?
Again, just a thought!
