Japan inspired things in Warcraft

World of Warcraft as an RPG has drawn inspiration from many places in real world, and there is some really obvious inspirations like Pandaria taking the visual elements of chinese culture. Old Night Elven cities having some greel visuals to it, Gilneas having Gothic elements and so on.

One thing that i always found interesting, is how there are many small things inspired from japanese themes, but nothing big.

At first, there is the Orcs, their blademasters are based on the samurai, with their own twist, but you can see the eay they dress, the hairstyles.

Night Elves while have a lot of greek themed constructions, also have a heavy presence of what is known as a torii, you can see in their city entrances, in the moonwells, and there is some haircuts for night elves that seem inspired.

There is also quite a few katana transmogs, but they all seem to be vanilla era, with one exception i’ll go on later.

Now, ir seems the Jinyu and the Ankoan are the ones directly inspired by japanese themes, from their names to their culture, i don’t have much on the Jinyu, but questing so much in Nazjatar makes it clear that they are very samurai based, their weapons while not katana designs have a lot of elements of katana designs implemented.

Just something fun, have you guys know more connections that can be made? Or even other countries amd cultures that have been inspiration for something minor in Wow and you find fun or interesting.

I would differ with that assumption,it is more leaning toward chinease then japanease , One there Ankoan bows with the same as the pandean .Japanease don’t bow with hands clasp ,the only time that is seen is in western movies.

The entire human race is based on europes white knight medieval history. Night elves are based on the amazon mythology a race of female warriors. So if you wanna link some stuff to irl world history there you go.

Night elves certainly are a cross between Greek and Japanese styles.

Almost every culture in this game is a fusion of real-world cultures. I can’t think of any that exclusively draw from one individual country or culture. The Pandaren are no exception.

Japan:

Note the single-edged blade and hakama.

China

The clothing and the general concept of drunken wushu.

There’s very little in this game that fits into a nice, neat little box.

This is a tougher question to answer, because there’s very little in the way of actual Gnome architecture, and almost nothing of Gnomish art as a result of the lack of their own space. Pretty much everything one can infer about them comes from the way they’re animated, the way they speak, etc. Their government as described in lore is pretty much a democratic technocracy, which sounds weird to even say.

If I had to place them based on what we know of them, I’d say they draw largely from the early Germanic folklore that Gnomes were originally conceptualized in, with a healthy dash of American and English turn-of-the-century industrialism.

I am from Japan and can confirm this.

I don’t think they do this in say, China, Korea or Taiwan either…?

I know that they do the hand clasp bowing in Thailand though.

Night elves use Shinto temple-ish roofs for their houses if you pay close attention to them.

And some parts of india it’s cultural behavior more like a symbol of the temple of god.Namaste.

Night elves are korean. They eat kimchi and have https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namdaemun in Darnassus and Feathermoon Stronghold.

Is the first one official artwork?

They both are. Both pieces were drawn by Samwise Didier. You can spot his signature in the lower right corner of each. It’s a little harder to spot in the second, but it appears just above the bottom right Dwarf’s belt buckle.

I wish there was some decent Japanese themed armor sets.

Me too. Would love a proper gi or hakama as a transmog. Samurai Armor would be great as well
