So we’ve been amusing ourselves in our home by reading the novels and lore books over the holiday season, and my husband and I are both just completely mystified by the Alliance’s respect and love for Jaina.
Sure, she’s been around as a “hero” since WCIII. We played that game back in the day, and here’s the thing: Jaina has all this power and all this diplomatic pull, and she never does a thing–never lifts a finger–to stop evil. She always turns her back on it and walks away. Sure, she says things like, “I can’t watch you do this,” but did she actually try to stop Arthas from slaughtering innocent people? When she still had the power to single-handedly take him down, she did nothing. She teleports in and out to say something sanctimonious and do absolutely…nothing.
Later, she’s super powerful and enjoys her role as the chief honorable talking head that brokers peace with the Horde and befriends Thrall and Baine Bloodhoof. The one really honorable thing she tried to do was convince Thrall to come down off the mountain of shamanic earth-healing bliss and fix what he broke by putting the psycho in charge. When he refused, she didn’t put up much of a fight. She didn’t even express her anger.
After Garrosh obliterated Theramore, Jaina’s first instinct–the FIRST. THING. she decides to do is steal the same artifact, lie to the man/elf/dragon she has fallen in love with, and obliterate Orgrimmar with all of the innocent people in it receiving the same treatment Garrosh gave the small outpost of Theramore. She was going to do the same evil thing on a scale an order of magnitude greater. It took Thrall and a former dragon aspect (same aforementioned man/elf/dragon) to stop her. She wasn’t going to stop. She didn’t have some heroic change of conscience.
Inexplicably, the Kirin Tor overlooked her thievery, her deceit and manipulation, and her near-miss attempt at killing more innocent people in one second than Garrosh did his entire reign, and made her their leader. WHAT?!!! Oh, she apologized and gave the artifact back. Okay. Totally makes her Kirin Tor leader material. /eye roll
Shortly after, she attends Garrosh’s trial in Pandaria. As the leader of the Kirin Tor. As the leader of the solidly neutral council that governs magical issues and safeguards magical balance in the world. The council that absolutely cannot ever take political sides.
Does she sit in the middle? No. She sits with the Alliance leadership glowering and complaining that we can’t just slaughter Garrosh outright. She’s still salty for revenge.
She is in no way qualified to lead the Kirin Tor. She is in no way qualified to be an Alliance leader. She is in no way qualified to lead the Kul Tirans. She is a horrible human being.
