I leveled cooking, that was straight forward enough. Had to look up that recipes are discovered, but I got there. So I tried to tackle blacksmithing. It’s convoluted. I just wanted to make some of the molten gear that I spec’d into. I’m not a raider or even a mythic dungeon enjoyer, I just fart around doing world stuff. I just wanted to try it out, make something to wear with my name on it. I had to look up a guide to figure out what all these optional things are. Then I had to look up how to get them. Still haven’t figured it out. It’s just not enjoyable, so I logged off. Maybe I’ll go back and try again, but right now I’m more confused than I was before I started looking things up and all motivation to try is gone.
You dont need those optional reagents to craft yourself a piece of molten gear.
First optional slot comes from mythic plus and raiding, so you cant have it.
Second slot is missive you buy at AH and defines your desired stats on gear when added during crafting.
Third slot is where you put embelishment, an improvement to your gear piece. It is bought at AH.
Fourth slot is only for pvp, it raises your item level in pvp instances only. It is bought at pvp vendors.
SO, in your case, you can only fill 2nd and 3rd slot.
Thank you. I wish I’d found a guide that explained it as clearly as you did. I had decided I was just going to just craft it without doing any of those slots and ignore the little “but it’ll be ruined!!” voice in my head, but with your explanation I’ve found the other bits on the AH!
Something else you didn’t notice in the terrible lack of documentation: even if you craft an item suboptimally because you are missing optional enhancements or the skill necessary to guarantee a higher final quality, you can recraft the item later after you gain access to the optional goodies and greater skill.
For most “important” crafted items, your first attempt doesn’t freeze the item in that state forever.
I can agree with some of this. It is a much different system that is for sure. I do enjoy the new profession system even though it is way over engineered. I’m playing some of my alts off and on now that things are slowing in this expansion and I’m finding it frustrating to catch up on their professions with the points and with recipes.
