So i’ll address the 3 main arguments i’ve seen against having transmog available in wow classic first.
-
#nochanges: i get it. no changes. but we’ve already seen changes from the layering system, instant mail, to the coming dual specs and we’ll see more i don’t doubt. we can add transmog and keep it in the spirit of classic and it can always be an opt in.

Being able to see what others are wearing at a glance in PvP: transmogs would be hidden whenever the player is engaged with pvp. this also includes when a dual is challenged. as such transmog would not be available on a pvp server. or at the very least opposite factions couldn’t see each others transmog. in fact, just saying that alone would nullify the pvp argument. you simply can’t see the other factions transmog. or if you could, they’d have to be pvp neutral so still maybe not on pvp server.

transmog would affect the economy: vanity gear will always be in demand. however what i’ve come up with addresses that down below.
so how does my system work? How can it ‘feel’ classic. well it’s got to be something that takes time and effort and it can’t be done on the fly. it also needs limits and restrictions.
My suggestion is to make it part of the Darkmoon Faire. right away it’s time locked accessible making it just one part of the time and effort it takes to transmog. So when you go to the Faire, you speak to the new transmog vendor, sign the transmog contract and recieve a tome. this tome allows for the collection of tokens (a currency collected by killing mobs or players that earn xp) that can be spent at the vendor to purchase varying player lvl ‘pattern copiers.’ My idea is to have a vendor for each item rarity, and each vendor sells ‘copiers’ for graded level requirements. So, you could go to the grey, white, green, blue, purple, vendor and buy a copier for say lvl -10, or lvl -20, etc.
these items are used to copy the pattern of an item onto itself which is then taken back to Faire where it can be applied to your outfit. when an item drops while you’re solo, use the ‘copier’ in the same fashion as placing a lure onto a fishing pole. a new item is made that is a copy of what you want to transmog. when you make a copy of an item your option to need or greed is removed.
So how’s that stop people from needing on things they don’t really need? well, when an item drops in a group a new option will show for anyone that’s opted in for transmog by having the tome AND has the right token. That new option will consume the appropriate lvl item token and make you a copy to take back to the Faire. any player can make a copy, it’s not limited to 1 (or maybe it is and a roll is made). copying an item removes the option to need or greed. when an item is needed by a player it is flagged and cannot be used to transmog. there will always be people who need on things they don’t really need even if it’s just to vendor.
Items cannot be traded and transmoged. they cannot be bought or sold on the AH. if you’re soloing and an item drops it’d be no different than classic so that should solve the issue with the wow economy. you can of course buy anything anyone is willing to sell on the AH or trade and wear it just like classic, but it would be flagged as such and unavailable for transmog. Items bought from NPC vendors of course can always be transmoged.
That said i have other ideas to go along with it. part of the classic experience of vanity items meant that they took up bag space or more likely bank space. So, when you sign the contract you lose 10 bank slots (11 if we count tabard…but i think tabard should be left out of transmog entirely). these lost bank slots account for the 10 transmogable slots a character can wear. In return the vendor is able to hold 5 patterns for each available item slot in your ‘cubby’ totaling 50 slots. this would allow for up to 5 full outfits of transmog gear and tons of options to switch around. In turn while the ‘item copiers’ can stack, the copied items don’t. when a copy is made it will take its own item slot until it can be taken to the Faire and placed in your cubby. items in your cubby can be taken out and banked. but there is no ‘infinate’ storage of transmog gear, they are soulbound and cannot be bought, sold, traded, or mailed.
I do hope this sees some consideration. i’ve given it a lot of thought.
