This phrase always amuses me. Like somehow it turns an opinion into a fact. Pretty sure most of us have been playing for a very long time. I can appreciate the longevity, but do folks believe it somehow elevates their opinion over others? We all have opinions about the game, but they are still just opinions. I’m sure everyone just wants to be heard. What’s an opinion that you have offered that someone else who has “played since Vanilla” has dismissed?
I’ve been playing since vanilla…and most of the ideas that I dismiss are the ones were the OP suggests that we need to turn retail into vanilla again.
I did it once, I dont want to do it again. Thats what classic is for
I agree, wholeheartedly. I think if people wanna play classic, they should go log into classic. I like the QOL improvements in retail.
I played Vanilla, too bad you missed out on the best days of the game.
Every time someone states in their post that they’ve been playing since vanilla, I immediately know they have not been playing since vanilla.
I’ve been playing since double secret invite only pre alpha tyvm
it does indeed make their opinion have more validity than those who havent played as long.
Most of the times no.
But, there are times when yes, absolutely.
20 years playing the same game does give you experience, knowledge and enough perspective to have a better opinion or view than someone who’s been playing the game for 1 or 2 expansions.
I wasn’t a vanilla player, but I do think that some of those players absolutely know more about how the game should be played designed than a lot of current developers of the game.
The biggest issue I see however, is that those same people tend to completely SUCK at communicating without sounding condescending and elitist.
This is becoming my favorite genre of poster now.
The “Make all the content easy again and no, I won’t play classic.” Poster.
My favorite thing to do when someone says they’ve been playing since vanilla is to check the FOS achievement section. 20 years of playing and almost zero raid data is hilarious.
you know some older players have multiple accounts ya?
What does the number of raids logged have to do with it?
to a raid logger who plays 5 hours on each raid night and thats it everything to everyone else nothing at all.
I still kicking myself for not buying the pure black nightsaber for 900 gold, oh we’re getting new updated mounts? I will wait… Little did I know they were removing the old mounts for armored new ones and the pure black nightsaber was gone forever.
It does.
The longer you’ve been playing, the better and more correct your opinion is, objectively.
People who started playing Cata and later are better seen and not heard.
That’s drinking talk right there.
This. Pretty much any time I mention having played since vanilla it’s to counter someone else who’s trying to use that as justification or authority for their bad ideas.
“oh I am sorry. WoW wasn’t a very good game during vanilla so I waited for it to cook a bit longer”
If someone said that to me unironically, I wouldn’t be able to imagine anything but spittle drooling out of their slackjawed mouth.
Vanilla was good, for what it was and when it happened. It wouldn’t have been successful otherwise.
Lots of people want the game to be like it was while ignoring how much heavy lifting the “what and when” do in that statement. What they really want is to feel the way they did then, and a clunky game with poor QOL isn’t going to do that.
