It's time to get rid of the rotation attack playstyle

I’m reading the forums and there are countless threads about how boring the game is or how it is failing to keep people entertained in this expansion. That is quite an accomplishment when you have multiple continents packed full of content.

I also can’t help but notice that the hardest part of content is either keeping track of your cursor in the midst of the epilepsy-inducing attack graphics or simply remembering not to stand in fire while you do your attack rotation.

Perhaps it is time to look at a new play style for WoW. Ability bloat has been a thing for far too long, as has this dated style of play. If we had engaging combat mechanics, the entire world of Azeroth could be renewed. And while I know this may seem like a big jump, it is also long overdue.

I wasn’t a fan of much in Lost Ark, but the boss fights and the action-packed fighting were definitely a step in the right direction. If WoW followed suit and adapted the game to be less ability-heavy and, well just more FUN, this game would flourish.

Just a thought. Still, it’s the same thought I have every time I am turreted on a boss fight and sitting there spamming abilities. It’s been this way for 20 years now and maybe it’s time to consider a change.

The combat is the one thing wow has gotten right constantly. You want failed MMO combat?

Absolutely not. You want slimmed down combat? Go play GW2.

Are people really that bored? I am trying to be an all-rounder for content and I can’t find time to do it all. (As someone who has two mains over last few years and is struggling for the first time).

You want to upend WoW and change it into and entirely different genre and you think that will work?

It won’t.

Perhaps spice it up a bit, but entirely changing the way the game is played from a combat point?
Combat is one of the few things that gets consistently nailed.
Encounter design lately has definitely felt lacking, played out, and hitting the wrong notes, though. Especially M+ boss encounters.

Pressing buttons in a particular order is not new combat, nor is it that much fun. It’s 1990s MMO combat and wasn’t even invented by Blizzard. Every other game has evolved past it. I just think it’s time for a major overhaul.

just kidding, this sounds totally boring in a fantasy game.

Fine for CoD or that fortnite crossover thing a while back

Like FF14, which is constantly cited as WoW’s largest competitor and uses…

The exact same style of skill rotation combat and arguably in a simpler way that WoW does. Oops.

What you’re essentially asking Blizzard to do is rip apart the game, completely, and rebuild it.

Because changing the combat style is an extremely big, radical change. Far more radical than anything they’ve ever done before, including warbands. It’s not the type of change you do with a patch, or even an expansion. It’s a ‘we rebuild the game from scratch with entirely new systems’ type change.

If Blizzard ever decides to do a WoW 2 and launch a new version of World of Warcraft, then I could see them revamping the combat system for that. But not at any other point would they consider it given how much work would be required.

Evolved into significantly worse MMO numbers? Yes.

Apologies I do kinda get what you’re saying, I got a different kind of satisfaction from New World but I do think WoW’s action combat design suits it and is a big part of it’s success.

I do enjoy MMO’s with skill shot gameplay like Lost Ark and Tera. I’d be happy to get rid of Tab Target combat but I think I’m in the minority.

It’s a tab-target MMORPG game. If you don’t want a tab-target MMORPG game go play a different game

The button presses, responsiveness, and “feel” or wow abilities are what set it apart from every other game.

Unironically, most people hate doing mechanics.

Changing the game to be focused on mechanics instead of rotation would kill the game pretty quickly.

I mean just look back at how many complaint threads there were about every single affix every week.

Not at all. But why do we have 3 action bars full of abilities? We use a fraction of those. And after 30 years of playing games with this exact playstyle it gets really old. UO did it. Everquest did it. Horizons did it. Then WoW did it. Then loads of other games did it until they found a better way.

I don’t want to change the game at all, but when you have loads of continents not being used and players logging off because they lack content, why not spice it up and make the entire game more engaging?

It can be a nightmare for me playing with an Xbox controller.

Me: “I would like to take less talents that have abilities, and more that buff current ones.”
Blizz: “Draw 3 more abilities. Uno.”
Me: “I think we’re playing different games…”

Don’t bind or talent into things you don’t use?

Then you won’t be “meta” though, and groups might drop you.

Honestly this.

Not trying to throw shade at FF14’s combat but WoW is significantly better in comparison.

Maybe ESO as well.
