Item Suffixes e.g. "Of Shadow Wrath"

Were they in at launch or added in a later patch? Or buffed in a later patch?

One thing I have been doing is searching for and getting together pre-BiS lists for a Warlock (the class I will main in classic)

Most of the “bad” lists will include things like Spellweaver’s Turban and other items that I know for sure were added to the game in 1.10 or items like Ban’thok Sash that had the stats greatly buffed in 1.9.
However the “good” lists I have found list green items like Lunar Wand of Shadow Wrath (with shadow damage depending on level) and Master’s Mantle of Shadow Wrath.

I have found conflicting info on when these “of Shadow Wrath” were added to the game. If you look at wowhead classic it says “Added in patch 1.11.1.28211”.
But then again, wowhead also says Rod of the Ogre Magi was “Added in patch 1.11.1.28211”.

Does anyone know the answer to this? Or does anyone have any insight on the best way to find this info?

Cheers!

I haven’t done much digging past finding this but most suffixes probably predate 1.3.0.

Patch 1.3.0 reference: "Changed the tooltip on random property items with the suffixes “of Concentration” and “of Regeneration” to more clearly state their effects. "

Rod of the Ogre Magi isn’t a suffix item - According to a list of suffixes on WoWWiki in which “of the Ogre Magi” or similar, is absent. (there are new ones added in TBC that are separated in another list - of the Champion, Hunt, Nightmare, etc)

Its possible that the suffix system has been there the whole time but they added new items that work with said system in later patches.

I think the suffix system was always there.

They were added during the Dire Maul patch and then upgraded late to have higher values.

Take for example your prebis cloak; +21 shadow damage would be the best possible roll. This was not possible until Dire Maul. Before then, most Warlocks would use the Bloodmoon Cape or Royal Tribunal Cape. This is just from memory of what our Warlocks used back in 2004.

On private servers I believe +damage items are added in at the earliest stages and scaled as content is released.

If it is in fact true that the suffixes were always in, you would have seen many more people using the cape out of Stratholme off of Archivist with varying stats. I don’t think that was ever the case, but I’ve been wrong before.

As I’ve never played a caster until recently, I’ve never looked into this, and all my information is from experience.
