So, my warlock, level 83, total item level 129 is currently using the Nightfall Darkcasters Greatstaff (ilvl 92) as his weapon(2 handed staff). I did a world quest that gave me the Blooming Rootwarden’s Focus(ilvl 151) wand. When I equipped the wand, my total ilvl went down from 129 to 127 even though my weapon went from ilvl 92 to 151. I did notice that the Focus weapon is considered a Ranged weapon. But it still goes in my Main hand weapon. Why would my ilvl go down when I equip a weapon that goes from 92 to 151? So, what am I missing here?
You need an offhand when using 1 hand main hand weapons.
Ok. That makes sense. So, even though the item level is an upgrade, a two handed item level has more weight in th eoverall item level?
Your warlock has 2 hands.
A staff is a 2-hander. You hold it using both hands so it takes up 2 slots and iL is calculated over both.
Your new weapon is a main-hand and you use 1 hand to hold it so it takes up 1 slot. Your other hands is now empty, so the 2nd slot is empty. You need to equip a main-hand in one slot and off-hand in the other slot.
So rule is… hold on using the staff, put 1-Hander in bags and when you see an off-hand, then equip both to replace the 2-H staff.
Not really.
You should never have a 1h without an off-hand, so just exclude that scenario.
A 100ilvl staff is the same as a 100ilvl wand + off-hand.
It is the same as a 110ilvl wand + 90ilvl off-hand.
Yeah, it all makes sense with the 2 handed weapon vs a 1 handed weapon. I guess my confusion is blizzards UI. when I compare the two weapons, the wand has mplus stats over the 2 handed weapon. And that lead me to believe its better.
Didnt at on epoin many many expansions ago, the 2 handed weapon always had twice the stats as a 1 handed weapon?
Yes so you will get better damage with the 1H alone (if total stats is better) vs the 2H staff…. but the iL will look lower. So buy a cheap off-hand off the AH to pair.
Ahhh thats a great idea. I was trying to get the drop from a dungeon. I will just look at teh AH. Thank you
