Retail has lost its rpg identity and has become a seasonal lobby game now. To be completely honest, I’m not enjoying SoD either. Plain old vanilla really is the best version of the game.
Sorry for stating the obvious but I needed to get that off my chest.
Honorable mention for hardcore. It wasn’t half bad.
Like, I agree, but who’s the official that made it official? I demand names and credentials!
You know, prior to WotLK Classic I would have disagreed with you here… but WotLK just didn’t land for me. It was too close to retail for my liking and if I wanted that, I’d just go play retail.
I still vibe on Vanilla but TBC was a pretty solid iteration, especially in terms of the classes and how they play.
Any and all motivation I had for TBC got stalled out entirely with the lack of communication by Blizzard on whether or not TBC will be Era or not. I’d really like to do some TBC again but I just can’t bring myself to bother if they’re going to get force-moved to WotLK.
The right choice!
You’re on Alliance, right? If you need some bags and/or some starter gold to help with training as you level, ping me on the Legacy discord. I don’t know your Grob character, but I’m sure we can figure it out there.
It wasn’t until I played Wrath the second time that I realized retail actually started in Wrath.
I did some research to see how true it is, and there’s some supporting evidence when it comes to philosophical design changes that took place in Wrath, and the behind the scenes business acquisitions and dealings relating to Vivendi, Blizzard, Activision.
Additionally, the subscriber chart that people reference for Wrath being the “peak” is nearly universally misread in my belief. The chart actually shows that Wrath is the first expansion where new subscriptions fail to replace outgoing subscriptions at a rate greater than 1. If we had both graphs for new subs vs outgoing subs, I suspect the actual peak is late TBC/early Wrath, with a small respite for the ICC patch because it was quite popular, and is actually when I resubbed after skipping TOGC
I think that’s a plausible observation. Shifts in preference and attitude are seldom instantaneous so the cause of that peak was building for some time. I know I’ve certainly played expansions I didn’t enjoy long past what anybody would consider a proper expiry date because I didn’t want to lose my connection to the community I had at the time.
