Issues with gear after the item level revamp of Dragonflight pre patch

This scaling issue is ruining all sorts of content. Blizzard nuking some of their most fun and interesting items into oblivion is bad for timewalking, twinking, low level farming, etc. I really hope they fix this issue. I cannot understand why they’d scale only some of the items in the game but not all of them, or why they would’nt scale items already in our inventory. Very sad.

After spending hundreds of hours to build a timewalking set and justifying it with “well at least you only have to make a set once”… it feels pretty bad to have the entire set turned into junk. Its almost like Bliz doesnt care about the feedback from the players. Its not like timewalking is some big important end game content and timewalking sets were breaking the race for world first or something. Bad change is bad.

Big agree. And like 2 months ago I bought an ilvl 50 boe purp cloak from AH for 35k because it was just too good to be true, BEFORE they took out the Mage Tower.

That 35k item doesn’t scale? It just sits as absolute junk, not useful in any capacity? That’s the plan? Or any crafting gear with Relic IV or V? It just sits at such a low ilvl it is good for literally nothing but vendor?

I can still craft with Relic IV and V today, and they still yield ilvl 41 and 48 gear…

That was the plan blizz didn’t tell us they had up their sleeve?

I really don’t want to believe that is the plan. I want to believe everything will get scaled, and ench reqs will be adjusted. That’s what I would like to believe.

Hell, I’m trying to understand the math here. My crafted gear is turned to garbage, and enchants are only good for enchanting heirlooms with a level 1 toon as everything else now insane ilvls.

If my Shadowmorne and Val’anyr is garbage now, would be nice to know so I can quit wasting my time.

Bump.

Thank you so much for this post, I just did not and do not have the energy to be detailing these issues out anymore with out often they happen and how severe they are.

And what point do we stop allowing this $8B company to get away with these huge oversights and mistakes? This is what we all willingly subscribe to?

I’ve been using gold. But I was almost thinking of pulling out the plastic again, until I saw this weird crap going on in my bank.

Not that that helps, since someone else paid for me…

This was the whole point, to make timewalking gear, twink gear, and whatever gear your low levels happened to be using obsolete, so they’ll have to grind the new fully homogenized gear like good little drones.

When they bring back the mage tower again, only players in full final season DF mythic raid gear will be able to complete it.

I fully expect that timewalking will require heroic raid gear, just as 3 expansion old raids do.

Yeah, this scaling issue is making it damn near impossible for any of my non-Shadowland alts to grind their levels. I had a 50 Rogue that is so far down my list, I never got her to Shadowlands ( and don’t want to, either, I hate Shadowlands ) so I took her to Vash instead. I haven’t been there in awhile, it’s a fun zone…except her gear, which is Nazjatar ilvl 100, is woefully under what I should have. Quests are giving me ilvl 160+ gear, which is such a huge jump in stats, but the problem is while I’m being drip-fed this updated gear I’m facing regular enemies that have more HP than me and hit twice as hard.

This is NOT fun, Bliz. I’m having to blow cooldowns when I pull more than 1 regular mob, AND use potions, and the fights take forever purely because my damage vs their HP pool is so out of whack.

I wanted to get more alts up to the lvl 60 threshold before Dragonflight drops, but I’ve got way too many that I stopped at the end of BFA, never took into Shadowlands, who are now just undergeared for any further content.

EDIT: Also, I just got a Jewelcrafter recipe drop that taught them how to craft a socket gem that gives +1 haste and +1 versatility.

+1!!!

This is incredibly important and needs to be looked at by blizzard immediately. The scaling across the game has become wonky and seems to work differently based on the content. Old raids with both normal and heroic versions seem to be dropping scaled-up gear well beyond what their original level requirement was, while all raids with a mythic difficulty seem to drop scaled down items. This isn’t even mentioning the weird dungeon and quest gear scaling problems.

Thank you for this post! It succinctly outlines multiple issues, both with gear and with encounters. I still run several old raids and dungeons for transmog and legacy raid quests, and the changes really caught me off guard this week.

I’m hopeful that this is something that the development team is aware of and brainstorming how to fix. The timewalking events are among my favourite every cycle! I built up over a dozen characters with sets of gear from expansions past that make the dungeons an absolute blast! Finding the timewalking discord community (just earlier this year) was an extremely pleasant surprise.

It gives returning players a better foothold into returning to the game, and I often check in with old friends just before timewalking to see if they’d like to come back. Leveling them up in the dungeons is awesome, and they get the benefit of focusing on learning to play their character in end game-like content (dungeons).

Even if this is not a priority, it would provide a big sigh of relief (for everyone in this awesome community) to see an acknowledgement, or some level of awareness of the problem.

Signal boosting this bit here. Timewalking, by its nature, is not new content. I had come to expect that I would be able to use my old gear for old content. With the release of Dragonflight, Im excited to go forward with my Evoker even as Im deeply saddened by relegating my only real (former) character to “alt” status. I’ve been consoling myself with the promise that I’ll still get to play Irieonna during Timewalking weeks, since I spent so much effort on a gear set. If this isnt fixed, it will be a crippling blow to my enthusiasm.

I can say without hyperbole that I have purchased game time in the past solely because I wanted to play during a Timewalking week. I hope I will still want to going forward.

Uggg… went to dust an old level 50 toon off, except 90% of the gear never got the message about what ilvl it “should” be, and is now geared worst then what drops in most “classic” dungeons and raids.

Amusing.

Yeah, pre-cap gear is basically broken across the board right now. Seems like a rush job on Blizzard’s part.

If they would stop the stupid scaling we wouldn’t have these problems. Simple as that stop the scaling.

To add to this, not only is itemlevel and scaling completely broken right now, loot drops aren’t even necessarily giving you loot for your class right now - I ran two BFA dungeons yesterday on a mid-30’s Restoration shaman via the dungeon finder, and got two separate pairs of PLATE gloves.

The scaling is far better than the system that existed before it. They just need to take the time to properly scale the gear, and streamline the process for when it happens next in the leadup to next expansion.

This happened to me as well.

An alt I’m leveling through WoD dungeons also can’t equip any of the gear she’s been getting, since they have level 40 level requirements.

Right now its safe to say that leveling in chromie time is by far miles ahead in difficulty than the current uldaman. but at least in uldaman you get gear that’s appropriate chromie time dungeon bosses only leave you with no sense of being rewarded. the random greens you get from them are higher item level.

This was never scaled to our level it is always ten level below ours .I don’t think they’ll ever change that practice.

They should change this practice. You should be able to use the expansion professions to at least help level through that expansion.
