I crafted the Vagabond staff that has Agility instead of the staff with Intellect for my Evoker. The staff with intellect requires the exact same materials as the one with Agility they both look exactly the same the only difference is the name is slightly different. It would be nice to see something in game that helped prevent players from wasting the materials that takes weeks to obtain on an item with no benefit. Why allow my evoker to craft BOP staff that has Agility instead of the staff with Intellect. I could see it being an option for transmog but both staffs look the same. I could see it being an option for a druid with an off spec but my evoker has no benefit from this. I opened a ticket and looks like my only option is to vendor it for 100g. 
I can definitely appreciate the frustration there. That said, I don’t think allowing you to salvage crests or sparks from it is a good idea, that’d open things up to craft a piece, get free upgrades to 636 or the knowledge+skill points out of the item, then salvage the limited resources. The best suggestion would likely be to expand the “you are incapable of using that item” warning to include a check for the primary stats present. It does warn if you cannot equip an item at all, but expanding that to items that are of a primary stat not used by your class could be a boon
