Hi all, I’m having an issue with my game ever since the anniversary update. I have a dual monitor setup, one for gaming and the other for Netflix/Youtube/streaming. The issue appears when I startup WoW. My main monitor is black but I can hear the game sounds but if I click over onto the second monitor, the main monitor displays the game like normal and the sound stops. I expect the sound to stop but I don’t understand why the game will appear only if I click off the main monitor. I’ve checked all my display settings and they seem to all be in order.
So far I’ve tried changing the in game resolution, deleting the wtf and cache folders, disabling addons, changing the directx version, scanning and repairing, and updating drivers. The only thing I haven’t done is a full game re-download. I’m hoping to avoid that if possible. I should also add that WoW is the only game that does this. OW2 works fine and so do all my other games on Steam. With enough tinkering I can get it to work but I can’t seem to figure out what the cause is. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
What OS, and what card? Could be a driver problem, maybe try running the game in a different mode (full screen or windowed).
I dual monitor on a RX 6700XT with no issues, with a samsung 24 inch monitor as main, and LG 24 inch tv as secondary.
Whoops, sorry, meant to put that info but forgot. I’m on Windows 10 and GeForce RTX 2060 Super. Main monitor is HP 25x and secondary is an AOC 2640G4.
I have tried the different windowed modes and that doesn’t seem to be the issue. It could be a driver issue but it didn’t start until the anniversary event. I’m inclined to think it has more to do with that but I could also be wrong.
One more thing to try, programs that put up overlays might cause the black screen.
It can be necessary to disable hardware acceleration in your browser to run it side-by-side with another accelerated application while playing video. Even then this isn’t a panacea, especially if you’ve got the two positioned such that they have edges that touch (like a borderless program running next to a fullscreen video).
I suspect it’s something to do with the legacy Overlay handling (often used for video) in tandem with the more modern desktop composition, but there are plenty of other systems involved which could be conflicting with each other.
