A few months ago I made a post here about an issue I was having. The description of the issue is as follows:
I’m having an issue that I’ve seen crop up in a few other forum threads. Whenever I point my camera away from an NPC that is speaking, their volume drops dramatically and I can barely hear them. The same issue occurs with in-game ambience, such as a waterfall. When I point my camera away from it, it sounds as if it’s far away. If I look back at it, it sounds like it’s right in my face.
In that thread (which has since been locked due to lack of replies), someone suggested that it may be an add-on issue and recommended deleting my WTF folder and WDB cache. I tried this solution, but the issue persisted, even with a fresh WDB folder and zero addons installed.
Has anyone else encountered this issue and discovered any workable solutions?
In my last post, someone responded saying that they had checked WTF > SavedVariables > Blizzard_Console and discovered messages indicating “failed validation” of various CVars. I checked mine today, and found the following:
“CVar ‘Sound_AmbienceHighpassDSPCutoff’ failed validation for its initial value.”
“CVar ‘Sound_AllyPlayerHighpassDSPCutoff’ failed validation for its initial value.”,
“CVar ‘Sound_EnemyPlayerHighpassDSPCutoff’ failed validation for its initial value.”
“CVar ‘Sound_NPCHighpassDSPCutoff’ failed validation for its initial value.”
I am at an absolute loss of what could have caused this, because before checking for these errors, I completely reinstalled WoW and have not downloaded any addons yet—which means I am getting these errors on a fresh installation of the game.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, this issue is extremely frustrating.
(This is the OP posting on an alt to provide an update)
I deleted the WTF and WDB folders yet again and logged in with zero addons installed. In-game I used /console cvar_default but the sound issue persists.
I logged out of the game and checked WTF > SavedVariables > Blizzard_Console, and all of the “failed validation” messages were still there, and the sound issue had not been fixed.
It might be some kind of driver or hardware issue then. It could also be some spatial sound or enhancement issue within the Windows settings as well. Post a DXDIAG if you can please.
I ran a DXDIAG (had to look up what that was since I’ve never done one or needed to do one before) and I’m seeing “No problems found” for all of my display and sound devices.
For the record, I have had the same problem for ages now. I tried the steps listed by Jambrix above the the Spatial Sound option was already turned off.
Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, as Jeysca above me said, I already have Spatial Sound turned off, so this does not seem to be the source of the problem.
