I have always wanted to explore the world, but don’t posses the financial means.
However, during new expacs especially, I get that feeling of exploration satiated.
I can’t be the only one, can I?

Interesting take. Never considered that.
I hate travel. I like staying in one place until I no longer like that place.
WoW is the poor man’s substitute for a lot of things. Probably mostly one for entertainment, though.
But, yeah, once in a while i’ll immerse myself with the game so it’s like i’m embracing certain surroundings. It’s nice to escape for a while with that.
This is the first time that I heard of this, and it’s an interesting theory , however, I think that players mostly like the escapism into a totally different world
Personally i find vacation vlogs and Flying 3d panoramas fun. But as far as things go, camping is cheap fun but the best thing is good company, the scouts were a riot. The people you go with can be all the change though from turning backyard camping in the woods into a flaming stick hollering capture the flag Boys will be men experience as we lit the bonfire with the hollering after a long day trekking and backpacking.
Still always wanted to go on a cruise, all things considred, i hear they’re actually surprisingly one of the cheapest luxuries possible, possibly being even cheaper night per night than a shower and bed hotel if you get a special.
But make sure you bring the right people to have fun with, friends, parties, honeymoon, or your spoiled, or yourself lol. People can make all the difference from a good to a bad one. To being miserable on a 72 hour trip to the world’s most prominent theme park to be unable to visit half of it since of schedule from people who treat travel like “Get from Point A to Point b as fast as possible and leave”. Bruh if the only point is to get in and out as fast as possible like a burger joint, why don’t we just zip on into a in and out and put up a slideshow montage?
I have imposter syndrome and as a consequence depression. As much as my reasonable brain can quantify the successes I have been a part of, no amount of promotions and recognition can ever shake the feeling of incompetence and doubt. It sucks, because no matter how over-achiever you are, you never feel you’ve accomplished anything on your own.
World of Warcraft has help me through the years with this. It seems silly, but having an Achievements tab where I can see and quantify my accomplishments in game, helps my brain convince itself that maybe im not the failure I think I am.
So yeah, WoW is an amazing little thing that does wonders for people in many different ways. I wouldn’t doubt for a second it can satisfy travel and wonderment for others. Despite many graphic shortcomings due to age, almost every single area has the potential to be immersible to the point that you forget you are questing just to cap another alt.
Google earth is even cheaper lol
I’ve visited quite a few cities in Australia that way. I would pick a random street in a city, and then switch to street view in order to see the scenery. There are many neighborhoods in the cities of Perth, Sydney, and Victoria that have houses that look like the houses in Florida. I fooled many of my Co workers with thinking that they were looking at a Florida house.
I’ve thought about this numerous times, and I agree with you.
From The Barrens to Winterspring to Un’Goro, it allows you to travel anywhere (and with solely positive impressions and excitement).
A 60 year old friend of mine when I was 19 was living out of his car at the time and said that with a book you can travel anywhere. Same thing with this game
Now that was very well said. Thanks.
A cheap way for a staycation is just to instead of rushing around, explore a nice area of the city, look up a park, a well rated or delicious looking restaurant in your city you’d be new too or want to visit. (Etc: Sushi, steak, ramen bowls, foreign cuisine, delicacies, fire roasted raved about buffalo chicken pizza, street tacos etc.) and go visit there. Sit in a park, take your time and enjoy yourself.
I feel the same way!
WoW scratches that traveling itch for me.
I don’t particularly want to travel the world myself. Maybe visit a few nearby states in the US but don’t have a real desire to travel out of the US. If I do find that I want to go somewhere, I look at pictures on Facebook and Google and find the need fulfilled. So WOW may do the same for some people.
Skyrim was certainly a traveling experience to a certain extent. I’d come home from work, boot the game, turn off the lights, and pop on my headset. From there it was a journey somewhere new every time and was highly enjoyable. WoW isn’t like that. WoW is a theme park.
Striking out on my own at 16 and bouncing around the US into eastern Canada living out of a backpack, I can tell you it’s completely possible to travel with a low income. It’s the experience which matters the most.
That being said, the Pacific Northwest is where my heart is and where I intend to remain for the rest of my life.
Regarding WoW being a substitute … maybe? As the saying goes, “we create our own realities.” Therefore, if you so choose to utilize WoW as a means to experience other places through travel, then who is anyone to judge you?
It certainly served that role for me when I was a broke teenager in a tiny secluded mountain town. At that point, Azeroth was 1000% more interesting than anything that could possibly happen IRL for me and it scratched an itch I didn’t even know I had.
14 years later WoW’s value to me has changed considerably. I’m not nearly as broke, so I’m able to travel occasionally, so now WoW is a point of stability for me – I’ll occasionally fire it up while traveling abroad for a quick burst of familiarity. Funny how that works.
I dunno, all fantasy settings are nice from an exploration viewpoint. Personally though I really really despise humans in large groups so traveling the world in the past has always been miserable for me. I’d much rather play video games than go on a cruise because of how people act when they are on vacation. Inconsiderate and obstructive to anything you could want to see for yourself… not to mention garbage EVERYWHERE in the famous tourist areas because people are awful.
I take two trips a year actually
It is kind of like that.
