World of Warcraft is one of the most highly considered triple-A games by many gamers. For over 20 years Wow and other games; mmorpgs and single player games for pc and consoles. Have been the shining stars of the gaming industry. But there has been some discussion in social media which asserts that the day of the triple-A games is over. That there are no new high quality games being produced by developers anymore.
At first I thought that this was outright nonsense. But after thinking about it. I counted the number of games I have bought over the last few years which are a good number. But I only consider Wow to be high quality as well as a handful of console games I own from the past.
It seems that the developers are focusing on porting old games to the new pcs and consoles. As well as presenting tons of indie games that barely function and are released as uncompleted. I was even considering to buy one of the new this generation consoles but couldnât think of a reason why. The titles are mostly old games ported over to these new systems, the so-called enhanced versions.
So are the people saying triple-A games are a thing of the past right? Is Wow the last bastion of quality triple-A gaming left?
âTriple Aâ means absolutely nothing to begin with. Itâs like stores marking their produce as âOrganicâ. Itâs not regulated in any meaningful way, Itâs just a term they like to use to pretend their product is worth more than something a smaller studio makes. See: Freaking Ubisoft of all crap-tier devs touting their game as âQuadruple Aâ.
WoW is⌠fine. Itâs doing what it always does. Itâs not going to win awards doing that, and itâs far too old of a game (despite regular updates) to attract a new generation of players in any meaningful scale, but itâs fine for what it is. Iâd imagine itâll hold the attention of a lot of players for a long time yet.
But I wouldnât really grant it any titles indicating that it is an above average product at this point. Itâs coasting.
This times 100. Did people forget that AAA game studios are kind of a meme at this point? Baldurs Gate 3 releasing and a lot of those big developers saying itâs not fair that a game set expectations that high? It has been a constant race between companies to see who can make the game with the best graphics, the best gameplay, the best story, the best music, the best customization options, the best replayability, etc etc that the AAA title is pretty much marketing to say they spent a lot of money on it but says little to nothing about the quality of what the momey produced.
Whenever I see AAA used to describe video game companies I hear Jim Sterling in my head and giggle. Also pretty sure Ubisoft are calling themselves the first AAAA game company so the AAA games are definitely joever now.
Which is funny when you look at how well games like Palworld or Lethal Company did right out the gate youâd think someone in a big wig corpo office would take notes.
I can see it now, AAAAAAAAAAAAH! Game studios. Because people angrily screaming at them. They canât just keep adding letters, EA and Ubisoft probably should have been losing letters by now.
Even though Iâm very optimistic about TWW, a lot of external factors are definitely working against the MMO genre here, even if WoW was a perfect game (and we all know itâs not).
Diablo 4 feels like a better predictor for the future trajectory of the gaming industry for a while, unfortunately.
And then it came out and had worse naval combat than Black FlagâŚlol. Youâre right, itâs totally meaningless.
Triple AAA games just mean games with the biggest budget comparied to AA and Indie games. Triple AAA does not equal quality. No I think for the future like the past weâre going to have AAA, AA, and Indie games, and regardless some are going to be game changing and some hot garbage.
Thereâs no prophecy or measurable direction for gaming.
Agreed. But there are no better alternatives so here we areâŚAn entire gaming genre being dominated by a 20 year old game and an 11 year old game that compete with one another while all other contenders are largely forgotten about in comparison.
And now that the only potential exception has been indefinitely delayed (cancelled?), we are in it for the long haul.
Thatâs not inaccurate. When I see an Ubisoft game, AAAA is my reaction too. Theyâre on my permanent boycott list now along with Take Two, Epic, Deep Silver, and some others.
