what will people play in 20 years and why is it Minecraft?
I remember reading that in 1990 people thought that in a decade, most dominant video gamers would be Westwood and EA. in 2000 They thought it’d be Sierra and Blizzard. In 2010 I don’t remember. probably Zynga and Activision.
I may not play one at the moment. I get them and their place in the horde. I did the story when it was current, unlocked them, got the heritage armor. I think they are a good race. They were still designed to be adorable to players and make the horde less “monstery.” Though blood elves made that less of an issue for them.
Kind of like the mole race now. The main purpose of them is to be cute to the player base. They do it every expansion. They pick a race in the expansion to be cute. It just so happened they made one a playable race.
Nobody really knows, nor do I think it really matters.
Though you’d think if millions, heck even hundreds of thousands of players were actively playing WoW right now, you’d see more than 7 people trying to form groups in the group finder to complete current world content in the new zone. I’m not saying that’s any direct indication, but… makes ya think. Or you’d think there’d be more than 20 people trying to form groups for arenas publically. Or more than 5 people trying to kill Elders on a Friday.
Everyone’s saying all these other MMO’s “feel dead”. Well, Zaralek feels dead too, doesn’t mean I think WoW is dying. However, I also don’t think there’s any direct indication that it feels like it’s massively more popular than every other MMO. If anything, it feels majorly the same (population wise) as all the other ones I play.
I think if WoW is to be considered the “top MMO” it is only due to inertia. It is a very aged game and it shows when you compare it against it’s rivals. I’m not even just talking graphics either. I remember reading once that, way back in the day, FFXIV launched a complete feces product and it was so bad and unpolished they took it offline and rebuilt it from the ground up and the devs were instructed to actively play and study WoW to learn what works and then FFXIV launched into a realm reborn (their vanilla) and it was a way better product. Having played both WoW and FFXIV (albeit not the recent expansion nor the latter half of the prior expansion), you can see where they took an idea and then made it way better.
I compared FFXIV to WoW once upon a time ago and honestly WoW was the one who needs to take the step back and learn from it a lot more than I say FFXIV had to from WoW anymore. At most, WoW held the edge with mythic+ since FFXIV had no comparable offering there but everything PvE related I found FFXIV to be the better overall offering.
The problem though is that damn inertia. I have got an amazing WoW account chocked full of leveled toons, collectibles, gold, you name it and it is overall very quick and simple to get to the hamster wheel that is endgame no matter if starting from level 1 or picking up a toon…by contrast, FFXIV makes you work hard because they believe the journey is every bit as important as the destination.
I digress. The reality is most people are addicted to instant gratification and a game like FFXIV which demands a pretty significant unfront and long term investment is a really hard sell to most and for a long tenured WoW player, it really feels sucky to start over in a new game and have nothing and be at the bottom of the totem pole especially knowing you can just log back into WoW and have all the comfort back.
That said, I think if WoW had to start over and it tried to offer even modern retail expansions as “vanilla” (let alone the actual classics), it would be decimated and left in the garbage bin of history in an instant. It is the epitome story of “right place, right time”.
Otherwise the money is moving towards cash shops and indie games, mmorpgs have somewhat lost its sheen in the greater scheme of modern gaming at least from a cost effective stand-point.
As in most active players? Yes, almost certainly yes. I don’t think FFXIV at its peak ever eclipsed current WoW and it certainly never surpassed Wrath’s numbers.
But I want other MMORPGs to do well. I like it when games are good. Also competition is healthy and keeps the genre from stagnating.
