Is WOW Free to Play?

Who cares?

If it doesn’t sell player power I don’t care about the store.

Those numbers come from, where exactly?

Because WoW is for adults with jobs. Kids don’t belong here anymore. If you can’t afford cash shop items, don’t buy them.

Until you can demonstrate how not having something from the cash shop gives you an in-game disadvantage, you don’t have a good argument. A business is offering premium content for people willing to pay.

If you want to bring Capitalism down, I’m on board.

Let the revolution begin.

Short of that, this is exactly what Blizzard should be doing if they want to maximize profits for Bobby.

The WoW store is absolutely nothing. A tiny handful of mounts and pets, they only release a few new ones each year. Other games are way worse on the store stuff. Blizz is very light-handed on it.

A bad tactic f2p game would sell actual gear, major cosmetics or gameplay affecting things on the store. A few mounts is completely harmless, you don’t need them for anything or have to buy them.

Blizz is also a business, so yes they have some profit-oriented things going.

I like how this fact surprises some people.

Yes, up to level 20. Or now, I think up to BFA. To play the latest expansion you need to pay.

In a way, yes. If you have the gold to buy tokens, you dont have to pay a sub.

That is true and is the case for most games I believe.

Final Fantasy has a store.
ESO has a store.
Guild Wars has a store.
Im sure there are many more games which are the same.

Of course they do, they are a business. And just like MacDonalds, nobody behind the counter forces you to buy that extra hamburger. Its your choice what you buy.

Would it be nice if the mount came from playing the game? Sure, Im always open to a pretty cat. But in the end, its just pixels. If I have the gold to spare I can get it with that, which I earn by playing the game. So ultimately…I guess I would be getting it by playing the game.

Because Blizzard can make much more money with far less players selling store content to players who like satisfying their instant gratification desires.

Well yeah. Kitty mount cost me 25 and I got it right away.

I haven’t even gotten invincible yet and it cost me $120 at least. year of failed ICC runs you see lol…

Same thread 10 years later… If noone would buy it they would stop, clearly there is a market and businesses like to make money. Like asking McDonalds to stop selling chicken nuggets.

Lots of people play free accounts.

Um… yes?

'Cause money.

Life isn’t fair.

I still think most of the in-game mounts are better looking than what the store offers. Some of the in-game only mounts have better utility, too via AH, Transmog, Stonedrake, etc., mounts. Can’t buy them from the Blizz shop, only in-game.

Nah, people like you are the problem. Throwing a hissy fit over cosmetic mounts that don’t offer much utility, like some of the in-game mounts do.

So the company can make money while keeping my sub price down.

Because it is all about me :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:.

If someone told you life was fair, they were lying.

They are not naive, they are avarice.

And I am not seeing how it is a problem. Would I prefer these things be in the game instead? Of course. But as long as the game makes money, it stays alive and I get to play it, so win-win.

Personally, the only real problem I see is ones with a lack of in-game background/explanation.

There are many, many free mounts you don’t have yet. Get on it.

You buy a car.

You pay insurance to be able to drive that car.

Your car already has tires, but you want these nice fat tires with shinny rims because they look cool. You don’t need them but you buy them anyway.

That’s the closest analogy I could come up with. Point being, just because it’s available doesn’t obligate you to buy it.

Businesses are responsible for profits to their shareholders and are required to make as much money as possible. It’s called Capitalism.

I don’t understand this thread. Nothing in that store is necessary nor giving you an advantage.

I pay for a gym membership, but I don’t have to buy their overpriced gym bag.

Some people just like to support things extra. I pay to go to a football game and also pay to get a T-shirt cause I like showing off my interest.

If WoW tried to survive on T-shirt sales, it wouldn’t work.

Fixed it for you!

You would have to prove how these people are a problem first.

up to lvl 20 it is. but you can’t use the mailbox. you also can’t use the auctioneer…and i don’t believe you can group up or join guilds either. so yes you CAN play WoW without paying the monthly sub fee, but there’s some severe limitations to it.

i’d mention something else, but i’d rather not get flagged as i’ve likely already ruffled some feathers as it stands.

I mean everything in the store is completely optional.

It’s not like you can buy the in game rewards directly from the store.

If you don’t want to spend money in the store don’t?
