Title says it all. I’ve heard WoW classic is really fun but only if you play with friends. As a guy with no history with classic and someone who has difficulty talking with others online, is it even worth getting into this game? Is it easy to ask for help for quests or dungeons? I don’t want to just auto attack mobs all day for quests. I want to play the game the way it was meant to be played but I’m just really nervous that I’ll screw everything up.
I recommend trying out alliance with us on Deviate Delight (see post on forum about Classic Fresh). Everyone in the guild is super friendly and helpful. The main adjustment is not seeing 1k players running around spamming chat with things like “GDKP must use discord voice, must provide resume and gear score”, stuff like that.
We’re taking it slow with the focus on making friends, helping each other, and having fun along the way. If at the end the playstyle isn’t for you, you can transfer free to the megaserver Whitemane.
Currently we have 20-30 people active online in the guild during primetime and we’re growing daily with plans to be able to all raid together eventually. Just message anyone in the guild “refresh” and we’ll get you an invite.
Horde on Deviate Delight (Era) is also helpful with similar numbers. For either side you will have a fair few people across the levels and occasionally meet up to help one another with quests or dungeons, however overall the world is rather empty and we don’t have much resources to work with yet, so please be aware that it is a tiny community! But it will be more close-knit than a large realm and feels more like a new realm. HOWEVER, it’s also a pvp realm, and pvp will happen at times despite the low population. You might be killed by a player of the opposite faction. If this sounds like a good environment for you and you are interested in the original classic then feel free to join us on either faction!
you’ll be fine. just join a guild and show up.
Start of with what class you want because you mentioned you didnt want to auto attack all day questing.
Avoid paladin at all costs due to that.
Top 3 is Warrior/Rogue/Mage for everything, rest of the classes are fine but those 3 are just the top.
As for social anxiety and talking to people… You made a forum post on the most toxic place next to reddit, you’ll be fine ingame looking for help or dungeons if people are doing them.
I would say if you enjoy healing paladin in vanilla is amazing.
Even you just follow around your team and cast flash of light non-stop (they have near infinite mana) everyone will love you.
Throw in a few freedoms, bops, lay on hands, and pally buffs and you are an amazing support class.
However they can be quite boring level (I suggest doing ret if you are questing you can still heal all dungeons if needed). 1-10 is really fun and fast on the paladin though, if you have the itch can always give it a chance and if you dislike it just reroll.
I think it’s worth it to play. It can be tough to find a community in the current landscape but you definitely can. In leveling dungeons more people are pretty chill and if you’re up front about whether or not it’s your first time people are super friendly.
Another alternative is you might check out Legacy on Grobbulus (search for posts by Jarl-Grobbulus for details). It’s a really cool/friendly group over there. The downside though is that, as the server is dead and they’re the only ones there, leveling dungeons don’t often happen. Folks are still pretty happy to help with a carry or quest assist if you arrange it on discord though.
So that’s an option Either way, good luck to you!
It depends on what classic you are referring to, if you mean classic cataclysm that is releasing soon, then yeah, it will have a ton of people and be a great experience for a newcomer to the genre.
If you mean classic era, well then no, the game is beyond dead, you will struggle to level, struggle to find people for content and you wont have anything but bot infested gdkps really to go for endgame content.
Classic SOD is a good in between, it has a playerbase but its future is far more uncertain with every new patch they sometimes completely shake up the classes viability so badly you want to quit for a whole phase, but it is far more active than classic era.
Id would heavily recommend you go with Cataclysm, you are prob gonna be finding more friends and long running enjoyment there than in the other places.
Yes. Find a guild. Not all guilds are created equal. Some are full of toxicity, some are not. I’ve found the WoW classic HC community to be the most welcoming by far. Good luck with SoD though. While I like it very much, the community in SoD is at the levels of retail (not good).
Roll a hardcore character. It’s a very solo experience, since raiding isnt the end goal for many.
Why bother? The only real World of Warcraft is the retail version.
If you played back when vanilla was live and didnt get to experience everything, then you might get a lot out of it. Unless you want to play it to do all the content you never saw, then theres no real point in playing.
It’s not like vanilla was when it was live. They have made it so much easier for qqing players.
most of vanillas struggles were player and hardware related, blizzard changed nothing of note that impacted the ability for most of the playerbase to breeze through that extremely easy version of the game.
No. Not for you.
A 19-year old rehashing of a grindy mmorpg is a magnet for many with social anxiety. It’ll work just fine.
I feel that I can speak to this, since I’ve played this game with social anxiety for almost 20 years. It’s popular with people like that because you can control how much, how little, and under what conditions you engage with others. You may be surprised by how many players have similar situations. You can talk to others as little or as much as you want.
Sometimes I feel like playing but not really talking or engaging with others, and that’s fine. Usually I’ll join groups, and it typically goes well. I like to keep my distance most of the time, but there are several other players I recognize and get along well with. Most of the oldheads who play Classic Era are really easygoing. The more annoying players (just my opinion) are heavily attracted to the seasonal realms, so they’re not my problem.
In general, I wouldn’t think of things in terms of asking for help, but more in terms of looking for people with similar goals that you can accomplish together (needing the same quest or dungeon). Mutual aid.
I don’t like being in guilds, but I still do a lot of groups, and that works fine for me. You’ll get invited to plenty of guilds and raids by people you meet in dungeons, questing, UBRS, or just hanging around in town. So if you want to join a guild, you will have no problem finding one unless you’re a notorious ninja or something. The trick is to find one that you enjoy.
Obviously you won’t get along with everyone, and that’s fine. I think someone mentioned earlier that Holy Paladin is a good group character, and I definitely agree with that. People are always happy to see an Hpal because they have something good to offer everyone and they make almost every group better. The only downside is that it’s a little more boring to play solo than the other classes (which I think is designed to nudge you towards helping others).
Mage is a good class that works well for both solo and group play. You’re one of the most prized dpsers in the game, with crazy utility and QoL to offer the group, and you can grind really well solo and make good money if you need to.
You could give it a try. I’d say that’s the anxiety which is asking first. There’s two clusters, one that’s populated and the other that isn’t. I had a blast leveling on the unpopulated one with one of the very few active guilds there. Wonderful people who are extremely casual and new to the game.
