Is Westfall server using Layers?

Because there seems to be about 10 5-person groups camping every quest mob in every square inch of every zone, no matter how remote or obscure a location. Pretty much can only get xp in dungeons right now at a reasonable rate… as much as I was actually looking forward to questing for xp and gear upgrades to enjoy the classic experience again… I feel like I have to “speed” level my way past the massive zerg of people swarming every zone… it was never this crowded in vanilla.

Post on your Classic character, not sure if you are just trolling.

not trolling, just feels like everywhere I go, theres a black friday sale going on… crazy crowded, thought maybe the layers are broken or something.

When the servers crashed yesterday I would log into the same thing you are describing. I think it overloads one layer before creating more layers, or they can only bring one layer up when they are under attack.

She’s not trolling , on Benediction it’s crazy.
You can’t even grind mobs cause everything is packed.

I was trucking along at a pretty good clip, now, for the last two days combined I’ve been stuck at 29 cause short of dungeon grinding you just can’t progress.

I don’t see why it wouldn’t be, but it has definitely seemed pretty crowded tonight. Had a huge group of people just on the boat to Menethil earlier. Lots of competition for quest kills too.

I’m on Westfall server, questing in Westfall. It was really crowded, took forever to kill quest mobs. Maybe people like the hustle and bustle of being in a crowd of people running around, but it does make it take much longer to complete quests.

What the heck is this layer I keep reading about?

During Phase 1 only, if a server has enough population, it’ll make a copy of the entire world (eastern kingdoms and kalimdor), populate it with new mobs and whatnot, and put players in it. The idea is to keep players split into smaller groups to ease server load and make questing less crowded.

Much debate has been had about the value of this layering system and the potential drawbacks… and how it actually works.

It’s Blizzard alternative word for sharding.

I can also confirm that Westfall is very crowded. It was crowded before, but after the DDOS yesterday, sheesh! There is just a sea of blue names every where & no mobs. I’m wondering if this is their attempt at reducing the layering as promised.

Havent played since Friday but yes certain zones are busy. Go do other quests in the zone or if you have one hop on an alt. Eventually the zerg groups move on. I have 2 basic but different paths (zones) my alts are questing thru. If one area is super busy, I hop on the other toon and its usualky fine. After 30-60 min if I hop back to the original toon, its usually has cleared up.

Oh on the Westfall server. The busiest area I have seen so far … is westfall.

Yesterday Redridge was covered in blue names and white npc names (corpses on the ground) In group of 5 we camped Yowler for about 6 spawns and couldnt get a tag before he turned grey… even tho we were standing directly on the spawn and trapping it… idk how long the spawn timer is, but after 6 waits… I realized how much more xp I would have gotten by just killing random NON quest mobs that whole time, and I just left… all done with any quest involving kill x mobs for x items-- they are way cost ineffective for leveling… which from a classic experience standpoint- not questing - is easily one of the situations that will drive people away from this game. On the bright side, once the game is a ghost town, I’ll be able to get those quests done efficiently!

Good. i don’t want your crappy layers anyway.

You figured out the same thing I did early on. For mass mob kills, its ok, but for some of those singular quest mobs that are in high demand and slow respawn, its better to just skip. Looking @you Gobbler!

This has been a common phenomenon since release and will probably continue until the player base nears 60. This is why Blizzard advocated so heavily for layering, as now you can easily imagine what it would be like if the population in your immediate vicinity was 10x larger. The game would be more or less unplayable.

The problem is that the game was originally designed for server sizes of 2500 players maximum. To save money, blizzard implemented layering and did not provide enough servers. Even with layering we are experiencing larger numbers of people than the spawns are supposed to accommodate. I also play in westfall and the 5 minute respawns of key mobs is unbearable and nothing like what it was years ago.

EXACTLY.

Blizzard saw the huge demand, and increased the server player caps by ALOT.

What they didn’t do, was take into account things like mob density, respawn rates, and drop rates.

When you have this many players on a server, those things turn into bottlenecks and become a annoyance.

It’s the best part of the cake. Only, the cake is a lie!
