Man, did he not call it for both Horde and Alliance…
(Alliance)
Varimathras: So, your Alliance still endures. Longer than I expected, though she has already planted the seeds of its downfall. She is patient, that one.
Varimathras: When your thrones run red with betrayal… when your holy places burn and the shattered mask hangs above your hearth… only then you will know. And it will be too late.
Varimathras: It matters not. You are blind to the true darkness closing in around you.
(Horde)
Varimathras: So, she found me at last. Sent her underlings to finish the job.
Varimathras: Tell me, when she seized your throne of hides and bones, was your allegiance forced? No… I’d wager you surrendered it willingly… or were convinced you did.
Varimathras: It matters not. You are blind to the darkness in your midst.
I wonder if the other dreadlords and Denathrius will mention him later or if he is not dead, will he make an appearance…

He should be since Antorus is in the Twisting Nether and at that point he’s firmly a Demon.
But we’ll see I guess.
Also I hate this more because these quotes mean Varimanthras was aware Sylvanas was allied with Zovaal before Wrathgate.
Which is before her suicide, which is before her Faustian pact with the Helya-Zovaal-Valkyr

Does it?
When he became aware doesn’t matter; he’s a dreadlord and can’t be trusted.

Considering those quotes take place long after the Broken Shore, I don’t know what betrayal he’s supposed to be alluding to for alliance players.

Lol, I’m still waiting on some Alliance juicy lore like betrayal. Maybe he’s alluding to Tyrande betraying the Alliance and pursing vengeance over justice?

Given the “thrones run red with betrayal” and “holy places burn” and “seeds of its downfall” are tied to eachother, it just further solidifies that the BFA-Alliance story we got wasn’t the one that was planned for the Alliance but the Horde one was.
I would bet:
- Genn wasn’t supposed to have a change of heart in Before The Storm at the time of writing the Varimanthras encounter
- Genn was the one responsible for the burning of Teldrassil in order to kill Horde armies and Sylvanas at the time of writing the encounter
- This is because Genn was supposed to stay the bloodthirsty warmonger anti-Horde Alliance leader, and for Genn at the time of Legion, killing Sylvanas was a higher priority than anything else and was willing to sacrifice Teldrassil for it
This is further cemented by the fact Metzen left when this writing was done and Metzen was confused by how the War of Thrones played out on live, which had already been elaborated plotwise when he left.

Or we are just listening to the deranged ramblings of a person gone mad after being tortured.
Nah cuz the Horde side foreshadowed the BFA Horde plot perfectly
But the Alliance one didn’t.

Varimathras was a prisoner and basically guessing what was happening. He is not some omnipotent deity that knew exactly what was happening. It just so happened his guess for the Horde was correct.
Even the suppose forshadowing is mentioned in such that he actually did not know how Sylvanas got into power.

Zerde the lines are written by real people trying to foreshadow the plot in the last raid of an expansion.
Varimanthras to the Horde foreshadows the writer’s plan to reveal Mueh’zala was the one who put Sylvanas on the throne (meaning he was aware Mueh’zala and the Zovaal were allies) and that Sylvanas was allied to some greater darkness (Zovaal).
Varimanthras to the Alliance foreshadowed holy places burning (Teldrassil), shattered mask above your hearth (Forsaken/Horde taking Darkshore), but also a “throne running red with betrayal”.
That last part is missing, and rather than it being something that is to come, I think it was cut content/pivoted storyline regarding Genn and his change of heart in Before The Storm, given Metzen’s comments regarding Teldrassil and the “Lordaeron/Teldrassil Rewrite Theory”.

The question is, when did he know Sylvanas was 2nd in command?
BTW: I love ya’lls mogs <3
Makes me want to change this toon’s mog.
Edit:
Zerde how long has it been since you started showing your helm?
Yes I know that. But at the same time we know writers can write red herrings. And in this particular case easily explainable with “this is a demon who is trying to sow doubt into people’s mind, why are you wholeheartedly listening to him?”
Because 5 of the 6 points he mentions to both in total aren’t that. At all. There is no Horde-side red herring.
It’s just pivoted plot.

The betrayal is Tyrande saying screw everything else I want vengeance.
Just because he is right(and I use that term loosely because he didn’t actually know) doesnt mean he was/will be right regarding his line about the Alliance.
People should stop wholesale believing demons, talking knives and whispering boxes.
Doubt it if only because Tyrande would likely end up dead and I doubt Blizzard went though the effort of making two cinematics showing her choose “renewal” just to invalidate it later on.
He did know lol
That’s the point of foreshadowing, which problematizes the alleged timeline of when Sylvanas allied to Zovaal.
This is a problem of a plot pivot (because the entire Horde dialogue is 100% correct while only 2/3rds of the Alliance dialogue is correct) + inconsistent timeline (as they presented the Faustian pact having occurred in Edge of Night).
Stop using in-universe logic to reject the actual meta-analysis of the dialogue.

I’m thinking Tyrande’s betrayal may have been something that turned into Alliance whitewashing caution by cdev.
That’s why Tyrande’s vengeance is so dis conjoined.
Again I think it makes more sense of Genn was the one doing the betraying against Tyrande, sacrificing Teldrassil in order to kill everyone in a trap.
Especially given that’s the same tactic Sylvanas used for Lordaeron.

You’re right, could have been that too. In any case; “You are blind to the true darkness closing in around you.” seems appropriate.

Again, this could be foreshadowing or another red herring with at best half truths(remember the whole “king of diamonds was has been made a pawn” only being about Magni being an unwitting pawn as oppose to actually serving the old god?)
