Is Unholy DK fun to play?

I main a WW monk and looking for a new alt. I’m very casual so I don’t run mythic. Lots of pve content. Also considering an sin rogue or enh shaman. Not a big fan of range dps classes.

Would love to know too, including Frost

Main Frost at the launched of 8.2. Loved it. Then discovered unholy. Never looked back! It’s fun, the damage is insane and the Survivability is amazing. Grinding for Nya’lotha is easy so far.

How are rotations and the rune system? Also, is mobility still an issue? I hated xmog runs & BGs cause it takes forever to run places, no real sprint boost etc…

I enjoy it. Plenty to keep you thinking a bit, where WW is basically the same combo over and over again. Enhancement isn’t in a good place. Sin is an excellent choice as always.

Rotation is easy and rune starvation is easily compensated with Memory of lucid dream minor essence. I never run out of bottons to press. Spending runic power trigger corrupted rune effect (lower cooldown of runes)

I really enjoy frost cause of the colors, the sounds, the combat animations and the frosty thematic, I would add more effects thought, like a frost spell effect for frost attack when it hit something.

Mobility will always be an issue, is part of the class.

I really dont enjoy unholy, the fantasy is better (summon undead and spread diseases) but you only have 1 desease, and i really dont like the mechanic of inflicting infected wounds and then splashing the dmg with shadow strike.

honestly unholy has the same sort of micromanagement mechanic as ww but instead of managing a combo its managing diseases and popping wounds…i think the hardest part of the class to learn is the AoE bursting in your DnD windows…everything else is pretty simple

use big nameplate addons lol

How is Unholy as far as survivability in just pve? This would be as you lvl up and then at 120 and are not maxed out at 440+ ilvl. I’m casual so it takes me a bit to get my gear up.
Also do they have any built in heal or is it using potions and such as needed? Thx

Survivability of Unholy (and Frost) is really good. Always keep a bit of power for a Death Strike and you’re back in business. I very rarely die even against big elites.

and if you are not confident, go blood and pull the entire zone

Fun is very subjective. I think Unholy is very fun, but that doesn’t mean you will. Try it yourself.

This is the best answer. Everyone likes different things after all.

I played Frost for most if not all of my time I have played DK. I switched to Unholy the day before 8.3 and I will never look back. It took some getting used to because of the “rotation” but the damage output is insane. I am completely in love with DK all over again.

A few things

someone mentioned old xmog/mount runs which I think is relevant as most people start doing them eventually.

While DK’s are slow as balls, unholy in particular has a super easy time wiping all the trash in a room by simply pressing their auto spreading disease once or twice while walking by. It is faster and easier and on no cd compared to other classes so it at least helps make up for a bit of the problem.

Unholy has one of the most fun rotations right now imo. I play multiple classes but mostly DK. While I am playing frost atm it’s mostly because I am stuck with 2 pieces of Azerite gear where last surprise is one of the best traits and I really dislike last surprise.

Playing Frost is similar to a ret paladin in some ways. You pretty much spam frost scythe over and over and over like ret does their little holy aoe and unless you’re doing breath it feels bad to use runic power in aoe since you can only do a single target frost strike. Icecap is arguably better than breath atm, dmg is pretty much tied but icecap is not effected by mechanics or CD windows as much.

The one thing that will turn people off to unholy the most is if they do not like death and decay in their aoe rotation imo. Once you get used to it I think it adds that bit of skill that is part of what makes unh more fun except when a tank moves the pack out of it.

Unlike most people I actually think frost has a much cooler lore aspect to it and is closer to feeling like a descendant of what Arthas was then unholy. Plus the Frost DK class mount is blue which marries up better to a lot of mogs I like than the green unholy has.

Anyway I could go on about the class for days. In the end if you like alts you will eventually always have the grass is greener on the other side mentality no matter what class you play but I always end up enjoying my DK the most and Unholy more than Frost the way the rotations are right now.

This seems rather unlikely? You are there’s not something better?

Compared to the death coil dot trait which has no aoe benefits or the generic azerite bubble which could arguably be better but I don’t want to look for it and the have to run over it, I do think it’s better. DK azerite traits are a bit boring overall imo especially considering our best trait is just a passive strength buff and yet it still feels bad not to have it because you know it’s the best. Hell chains is one of the coolest imo but for single target it’s not that great just like last surprise but at least it is great in aoe.

I know a lot of classes have passive azerite traits as their best but it feels like we have less choices for good ones as unholy. Like there isn’t a lot if one offs that you want to mix up even to fill out your character.

You got festermight on the piece already? If so, I’d go with harrowing decay as the second one. Single Target is also important for priority targets and bosses (one of the reasons we run magus of the dead in M+).

I like the magus trait but I only have it on one piece. Honestly if I could choose my traits I would stack festermight and magus. I do a lot of random BG’s and the magus trait is fun to me.

So my chest
Magus or harrowing decay
Last surprise or heart of darkness.

Heart of darkness does nothing for me right now because I don’t have the corruption to turn on heart so yea last surprise is best there.

Shoulders
Harrowing decay or cantankerous wounds
Last surprise or secrets of the deep

The shoulders feel really bad
Secrets of the deep is more annoying than any others imo, so last surprise again.

Helm
Harrowing decay or last surprise
Hellchains or bonespike graveyard

If I was raiding only then harrowing decay wouldn’t be so bad but I run mythic +and random bg’s and questing more than anything else right now and last surprise actually does aoe dmg but it is garbage for pvp while harrowing decay feels horrible in aoe.

I would like to have festermight and either the chains or magus on my all my pieces and last surprise on 0. I’m not willing to take off my 450 gear and go down to 435 to achieve this though.

You really got some bad azerite pieces
