I liked the way the log-in screen looked before the 7/24/24 patch, where I could sort by server and see only the character on that server. Now, with Warbands(?) all my 65 characters across 7 servers are mashed together. Is there an add-on that can restore the old way the login screen was organized?
Thanks

Probably eventually, the change just went live.

Probably not. Although I’m sure someone will try to make one – remains to be seen if Blizzard breaks them.
Ok, I hope it gets worked out eventually. LOTS of changes today

I don’t think there’s ever been addons that affect anything that appears on the screen prior to logging in to a character. I wouldn’t expect it. If I’m wrong someone reply to this later, because holy hell I hate the massive wall of characters. I had them separated by realm for a reason and it wasn’t the character limit.

There hasn’t. I don’t think it’s possible for addons to affect those files.
Be pretty neat if they could, I’ve wanted customized character screens for years and if Blizzard won’t do it I’m sure some enterprising modmaker could.

Lucky for me, I keep a spreadsheet of all my servers/character details (cuz Im a nerd) which makes today’s change about 5% less painful. However, THIS on top of all my add-ons are fubar and the cherry on top is the change to mounts. Im not certain I can recover from all of this - it feels all so so, not up to Blizzards standards, like as if they let newbies make all the changes

Do addons even have access to change the character logon screen?

I kind of like the new login window. I am on one server 97% of the time so it looks no different to me. All my favorite characters are at the top like they used to be and some of the ones I flip to on other servers can be visible above characters on my main server that are rarely used. But I can definitely see why people who split time between servers more evenly would not like the new system.

I organized all of the characters on my account (60) a little while ago. I logged off to make dinner, and when I came back there was a new “patch” loading. I logged back in and everything is back to how it was before I fixed it. I guess trying to organize everything is not a good idea at the moment. Hopefully it all gets figured out soon.

No, you have to login to a character before an addon can be loaded
Anecdotally, this happened to me. Had a hunch maybe it was because I did some organising in my character list but then hadn’t logged onto anybody and maybe that’s why the changes didn’t stick. I reorganised some of my characters and then logged into and out of a character, and now the changes have stuck.

Interesting…I will have to try that. Thank you for the info.

This was what I was suspecting. Honestly, the warband character screen is something I’ve been super looking-forward to… but seeing it in action the only changes I would make would be:
– Usefulness problem… The original screen showed more characters at the same time. I really wish this one showed at least the same number at a time as the old one did. IMO, the blocks given to each character name are unnecessarily large, you could make them a good bit vertically smaller without making things look cramped in the slightest. The vast majority do not need their character names in huge font.
– Usefulness problem… If you insist on making the blocks for each character so huge, at least use the real estate to put useful information there… LIKE THE SERVER THE CHARACTER IS ON. Having to mouseover the character’s name block to see it’s server is really annoying.
– Not a functionality problem, but it would be nice to see more than four characters.
– Not a functionality problem, but it would be nice to be able to choose each character’s pose instead of randomly choosing it. There are races for which I don’t like the kneel animation because you can’t see their face at all.
– Lastly, and I have NO IDEA how this could be accomplished, it would be VERY USEFUL to have a way to subdivide characters into labeled groups. I only have about 15 functional characters which get used and a tiny number there for “business purposes” of some kind and it’s already overwhelming to me to have them all dumped into the same list. I cringe for people with larger stables or, worse, people who reuse the same name multiple times.
Just my thoughts.

It is interesting to see this come up now, because it wasn’t something that was really seen during testing.
There were issues brought up about the Char Select Screen and discussed, but not the wall of characters, because we simply didn’t create a butt ton of toons. And there were 3 servers you could create toons on, but you had to change your realm to access them.
So it is a bit of an eye opener.

You can reshuffle your character order on the login screen. So, you can manually group your characters by server if you like. It does say which realm a character is on when you scroll over them, so even without your spread sheet, you should be able to organize them.

Don’t think it’s possible.
This was my immediate thought, too.
If I have 50 characters in a big, long list, and I want one of the alts at the bottom to be in the favourites, it seems I have to scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll to the bottom, and then drag, drag, drag to the top to drag and drop it into the favourites section. There doesn’t seem to be a way to right click, click a star icon, or even drag it over to the left and dump it near the camp fire. If you search for a particular character name/class/whatever and find the one you’re looking for, there is no shortcut to add that character to your favourites - you have to close the search and manually scroll through the list.
My first thought is “this is bizarre and clunky - why on earth wasn’t this considered?”, but logically if you’re in beta/ptr you’re not going to have an unwieldy long list of alts, and dragging one up to the favourites is going to be easy. Nobody would give it a second thought because there’s only 6 or 7 characters on the screen and it’s easy to drag them such a short way.
The other thing that appears to happen is if you reorganise your characters and then you don’t then log onto a character to play, your reorganisation will be lost and your character list will revert back to what it was before. This is probably also something not picked up in beta because anyone logging on during beta is not likely to log on, play around with the character list, and then immediately log off again.
I really like having a list of all my characters in one place but there are sorting/filtering/grouping tweaks that I really hope will be made in the near future.

That would be great but I can’t find a way to do that. I can sort by server but it docent show me just the character on the server I choose, it shows me ALL 65 of my characters in one very long disorganized list.
I feel like adding a tree list would solve the huge list problem.
Let the player select headings for groups, call then anything you like then add your characters to the groups.
Being a tree you can click the root nodes (your group headings) and expand/contract the child nodes (your characters). Small tidy list of your groups then expand the section you want and select a character.
