It’s just information. The more of it you have the better decisions you can make. The problem is getting enough information.

This is nonsense, and I think you know better than that. Most people will grab onto whatever fits their world view, even if that world view is based on an alternate reality.

They work well until Elon deletes ones he doesn’t like.

Weird how it works in like…everywhere with no issue.

I can’t think of a single business I interact with that doesn’t “censor” people.

Then they are carful.

No different than WoW.

It’s very easy to be “careful”.

People just angry they can’t be jerks online.

You are intentionally misrepresenting what I said - this is exactly the problem.

I said that people are free to form their own opinions and do what they want. What they should NOT be free to do is make up their own “facts”.

True - but there is also a problem with people not having any idea how to process that information. They don’t understand the topic and can’t determine what is real or valid from the information they have. They don’t even know how to determine if the information source is valid at all.

Someone could hand me a pile of documents, articles, and studies on quantum computing. I would have a lot of information. I would not have the background or knowledge of the subject to sort chaff from wheat. I would not be able to make any sort of judgments because I just don’t have the background. Same with all the internet experts who seem to suddenly think they have medical degrees, econ backgrounds, etc.

It is like that “I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night” commercials.

Yes, him limiting their information is bad. Agreed.

Exactly. People just don’t have the time or background to sort through the massive amount of information and DISINFORMATION being thrown at them. Half stories, opinions, lies all mixed with bits of truth.

People don’t have the time to head to the library and write a well researched paper on each topic that becomes a hot button or each news story they are interested in. They often just believe what they FEEL fits their views. They don’t even care if it is factual or not, if it is what they want to hear.

This is very close to “You’re not smart enough to make your own decision”. I will never agree with that.

People are free to make their own decisions all they want. They are also free to be wrong about those decisions because they don’t have the information or background to make good decisions.

You have watched people make very poor decisions all your life - because they did not bother to read the directions, did not bother to look up how something works, did not bother to ask questions. Those people are also entitled to deal with the consequences of their own bad decisions. Hopefully they learn from their mistakes.

What is an issue is when they try to convince others that their “opinion” is somehow fact. When those mistakes they make impact others besides themselves.

Telling an island of people that a proven medical prevention treatment is bad (an opinion) that results in over 80 deaths from an easily mitigated or prevented common measles virus. That did not have to happen. People died because of someone’s “opinion”. An opinion not backed by the actual decades of studies and statistical results world wide.

So yes, not having all the information causes people to make poor decisions. No, not everyone is going to have the background or knowledge to make the right decisions. That is why we hire experts. Doctors, plumbers, electricians, mechanics, carpenters, etc. Because if we screw up the consequences can be pretty severe. I am not interested in having my house burn down because I wanted to prove I was smart enough to do my own major electric work.

People are not “stupid” for seeking expert advice, resources, and assistance. What is not logical is just going with what you want to be true, or what some unqualified quack says.

“In a 2019 decision, Manhattan Community Access Corp. v. Halleck, Justice Kavanaugh wrote: “[W]hen a private entity provides a forum for speech, the private entity is not ordinarily constrained by the First Amendment because the private entity is not a state actor. The private entity may thus exercise editorial discretion over the speech and speakers in the forum.” 139 S. Ct. 1921, 1930 (2019).”

I’ll say it then, The general population is quite dumb. Look who the put into power and they think tide pods are snacks.

Yes, I agree with this. I just feel the best way to combat the problem is not to censor the wrong ideas, but to mitigate them with more correct information. and explain it as necessary to anyone who wants to listen. The problem with censorship, on important matters, is that once the tables turn, then you are censored. You have to trust the people telling what’s true to be honest. And that has ended poorly countless times.

I firmly believe in doing your own research all the time. Over and over, never stop learning, and never think you understand enough. I read and confirm and look at contrary opinions continuously. Just like on the forums. It gives me perspective to what and how others think. And more information helps me get a clearer picture even if that information turns out to be wrong. Then I can look into why they thought the world was flat or what ever.

That exact opinion has lead to genocide, murder, and other atrocities through out time.

Edit: People do do dumb things. but assuming they are all to dumb to think for themselves dehumanizes them and leads to Extremely bad outcomes.

There it is…same as the last thread wanting meta policies. Keep identifying yourselves!

This is also the foundation of civilization.

We see this every where in our day to day life now.

historically, it’s true, all those things are the results of a poorly educated and ill informed population.

Yeah, you shouldn’t dehumanize people. Or think or them as less than. It turns really bad really fast.

So I have the personal freedom to drive home at whatever speed I want and to stop at whatever intersection I want?

I don’t feel dehumanized abiding by speed limits, stop signs, and red lights.

Exactly. More information, for better or for worse in the short term, eventually breed better outcomes.
