This is a pretty specific request which I haven’t been able to find while searching. Is there a mod that lets you choose a city or town and it points you to the closest portal or route to that destination? Right now I use Zygor and it does a really good job routing you to the quickest destination to a city, but it doesn’t let you choose a specific city to go towards, it only lets you choose quest guides.

Can’t think of one off the top of my head. What you’re describing is mostly just playing long enough to learn the lay of the land on your own.

When you add in various portal rings/cloaks, random portals in hubs, … it’s gotten to the sad state where our maps need maps to find all this bollocks.

Dugi Questing Essential

it paints an ant trail (a dotted line) to your quest objective or anything else you manually highlight on the map. It will even pick the best route by suggesting flight paths over overland travel.
It does not follow a road or obey the topology, its just a straight line so you will still have to figure out HOW to get there but with Dugi, you will always know which direction it is in.
Dugi does tons of other stuff too but it seems to fit the requirements of your initial ask.

I understand there are waypoint addons but I’m old and I want something that reminds me of MapQuest
I want a list of directions. I don’t want an arrow. I don’t want to take notes
