Is there a Switzerland on Azeroth?!

So, I never see references to America, Russia, or China (excluding pandas) in WoW. Like nobody in the game ever refers to any particular real life nation because WoW is supposed to be a fantasy world and that’s great BUT… then I looted some Alterac Swiss and started thinking… How can there be a reference to Swiss cheese if there’s no Switzerland on Azeroth?

I understand Swiss cheese is a type of cheese but you’d think they wouldn’t have a reference to an actual country within a different universe. There’s just no way a WoW character could create some cheese and call it Swiss whatever unless there was a Switzerland on the planet. It would be like looting “American cheese” (lol) or “French bread”!

Does the inclusion of Swiss cheese put holes in the storytelling in World of Warcraft? Are there actual Swiss people hidden about in Azeroth? Has anyone looted a Toblerone?

I see what you did there.

Frankfurt must be in there too, since we have Roland’s Famous Frankfuters

Sorry, I know it was a cheesy joke :cheese: but a serious question!

WoW also references “Earth”, which is weird to me since we’re on Azeroth. It’s been explained to me that Earth refers to soil and I kind of see where they are coming from, but it still doesn’t sit right with me. I mean I’ve never heard of dirt from Mars being called Earth.

That’s because most of the people who are at all involved in Martian dirt are scientists and call it soil since both dirt and earth are layman’s terms.

Soil-y shield just doesn’t have the same ring to it as earthen shield

You do know that Swiss cheese is not exclusive to Switzerland
Swiss cheese is a generic name in North America for several related varieties of cheese

The hole version is obviously the one with holes in it called eyes, but there are many different versions of it such as “blind” or holeless Swiss cheese from Norway

So that cheese you looted in AV was in fact just a generic cheese LOL

You’re missing my point. How could someone on Azeroth name something Alterac “Swiss,” if, from their frame of reference, there is no Switzerland?

They couldn’t. It is indeed quite a conundrum. There must be a Switzerland, and we have to find it.

My guess is that if there is a Switzerland in Azeroth, it must be full of holes like its cheese. The BfA expansion would be a good place to start searching!

I wonder if the Azeroth Switzerland has Cheese Orcs, and if they make green cheese.

No, they’re on Draenor and they make Gorgrondzola cheese.

This thread really makes me want some cheese. A nice piece of extra sharp cheddar or gruyere would be good right about now, but, sadly, I have to eat right for a bit :frowning:

Well, if the cheese is Alterac Swiss, then Switzerland is probably Alterac, I think.

So you’re saying Alterac is Switzerland? It does have mountains, but does it have Toblerone? Or does it really Matterhorn?

Which ever decision you go with, I think I’ll remain neutral

Silithus is a desert. Stranglethorn is a jungle. Clearly, the game takes place in the northern hemisphere. Just you wait, OP.

If Alterac is Switzerland, then it got taken over by Hillsbrad in Cataclysm, meaning that at some point its neutrality was violated.

How did we overlook this atrocity?!
